Great solution for TINY birds!
I originally reviewed this item rather negatively based on observations that were affected by unknown factors. Instead of subjecting you to my previous paragraphs with a lengthy update, I decided to delete that review and provide my new, better informed observations. We purchased this feeder to provide the smaller birds in our area (Carolina wrens, chickadees, titmice, house finches, song sparrows, house sparrows, nuthatches, and American goldfinches) a place to eat where they wouldn't be harassed by the brown-headed cowbirds that were eating us out of house and home every few days. We have very active feeders and swapped out our regular tube feeder for this caged one of the same size. After two weeks of use, only 1 of the 6 birds we get here listed as "loving this feeder" (chickadees plus the unlisted song sparrows) seemed to be able to squeeze through the bars. The space between the bars is just under 1-5/16" (see picture). The sudden shift of all traffic to the more easily accessible hopper feeder containing the same food was bedlam and the cage feeder was retired until a new solution could be found. Then came the starlings... And I thought the cowbirds were bad?! Starlings eat just about everything. They show up in droves and whitewash the balcony to boot. Here's the thing: Different birds prefer different foods. So if you want to attract a certain bird, use the right food. But different birds also prefer different feeders. Take it from a guy who bought 8 different types of feeder in the past 2 months because social distancing has made him a crazy bird person. Lol. Experiment with different combinations and keep track of what works best for your area. While working on a solution that made our balcony less attractive to the starlings, all feeders were brought inside and the cage feeder was put back in commission to give at least SOME food to the other birds. Since then, we have seen chickadees, house finches, song sparrows, wrens, and the occasional gold finch inside the cage as it was suddenly the only option available, proving they CAN in fact get in there. All in all, everyone is happy and this grand experiment would have failed without this caged tube feeder. now that they are used to it, it's the only tube feeder out there and they use it readily. The starlings have lost interest after swapping out foods in the feeders that remain (no suet, cracked corn, unshelled nut or seed blends, millet, or invertebrates; stripped sunflower seeds instead of black oil sunflower seeds), and getting feeders they can't access for foods of that sort (this caged tube feeder and a wire mesh finch feeder the gold finches LOVE). As a bonus, the cowbirds now eat only what the smaller birds drop! We've had to sacrifice the fun of having the charismatic mocking birds and timid downy woodpeckers show up for meal worms and suet until we are sure the starling threat has passed. I think the starlings might have been karma against my original review. Jk.

Exactly what I needed
Primarily purchased to keep out annoying starlings and cowbirds and attract the songbirds I wanted and it is doing just that. Well made. Tube is plastic and all other parts are metal.

Squirrels Finally Lose
This birdfeeder is fantastic! Very well made and sturdy and the smaller birds flock to it like crazy. I sat at a distance and watched several squirrels try to get into the seed ports to no avail. The squirrels in my yard are aggressive seed hunters and have ruined several expensive "squirrel proof" feeders over the years. I am delighted to say this feeder is next to impossible for them to access and the cost of feeding the birds due to squirrel pilfering has reduced 100%. Very happy with this feeder and my little birds love the easy access.

keeps out cowbirds
I bought this feeder to keep out Cowbirds and Bluejays. It does the job. It took a week or so for the small birds to learn how to use it, but they did.

Perfect!
The media could not be loaded. The Blackbirds and Grackles were taking over my yard. These sweet Painted Buntings were constantly being run off by the big bullies. Thus feeder remedied that. They can't get to the millet. I knocked off a star due to the silver clips that some people said trapped the birds as their feet snag in them. I wrapped them with tape to prevent a problem. The Buntings are happy!

Finally!! This keeps the big, bully birds away!!
I have looked forever for a feeder that would prevent the big, bully birds! The starlings and grackles usually come in swarms and devour all the food, leaving nothing for the little ones and song-birds. The bullies have left it alone since they can’t fit into the cage, and can’t reach the food. Now only the yellow and purple finches, chickadees, titmouse, and sparrows are feeding and the seed lasts much longer. Yay!

This is not squirrel proof
I bought this feeder with high hopes. The squirrels chewed the lid stopper and then lifted the lid and destroyed the plastic tubing. This is not squirrel proof. I wasted my money. Do not buy this product or you will be disappointed.

Hard to clean
First, I like that the little finches love this feeder. They have no problem getting inside the cage to feed. They are well protected against the larger birds getting in, as well as predators. The feeder hold a good amount of feed also. What I DISLIKE: The feeder really can’t be cleaned well. I take my feeders apart to clean, and this one is impossible to get the feeding tube out of the cage, unless you take the crimpers off, which then renders the cage flimsy. The little feet where the finches sit to eat are too wide to pull the tube out of the top when the screws are unscrewed from the bottom. Feed gets stuck down at the bottom. Even with high pressure water, they can’t be dislodged. If they made it where the tube could be taken out to clean, I would rate it much higher.

Good quality feeder that keeps pests away
Durable quality, lots of feeding ports. Small birds love it because they aren't chased off by blue jays or squirrels. I found a red squirrel hanging out in it once but I scared him so bad he hasn't tried it again. Like any new feeder - it takes birds a while to get comfortable using it

Worth the money.
Keeps the blackbirds and squirrels away. Smaller birds have no problem with it at all.

Squirrel proof-ness
I liked it a lot AT THE BEGINNING. Today?? Not so much. This squirrel squeezed in the larger openings near the top of the cage. Look closely.. you'll see the lid has been wired down to the cage itself based on other reviews I read before purchasing. Apparently a new design is in order. It was a scary moment as I had no idea if he was going to get out, if at all. I had to take the cage off the hook and pray he left the same way he got in. He did. But, it could have been a lot worse.I think I should be entitled to a refund if nothing else.

Hello smaller birds....bye-bye larger birds and squirrels!!
Best bird feeder ever!!! After reading so many positive reviews I decided to purchase the feeder and am so glad I did. I admit at first I thought it was a bit pricey but after receiving it I now feel it is worth the money.I was so tired of black birds cleaning out my feeder within a couple of days, not to mention they are complete a-holes to the smaller birds. Same goes for squirrels. It only took a couple of days for the smaller birds to figure out how to enter the cage to get to feeding tube. Larger birds try but fail. The Stokes bird feeder solved the problem with the larger birds and I am so happy. I placed the feeder on a staight pole and then applied Vaseline to the pole. It is quite entertaining to watch the squirrels and chipmunks try and climb the pole....cause they can't.I did use over sized paperclips to keep the lid secured, just in case a squirrel does manage to get to the lid. I find them easier to take off then using key rings.Very pleased and highly recommend!!

Worth the money.
I’ve tried many feeders and this has been by far the best one for attracting and feeding small birds. The grackles and starlings quickly figures out they could not get to the food so they moved on.Update from 2024 - beware: as mentioned by others, birds can get their foot caught in the clip, this happened recently. We managed to get the poor goldfinch free but don't know if he survived as I'm not sure how long he had been caught before we found him. I will put hockey or duct tape on the clips before using this feeder again. Also, concur it is hard to clean! But otherwise, a great way to feed tiny birds, not squirrels and bigger bird bullies (starlings especially).
