Can this unit be mounted on a side wall? The existing unit in on the side wall so would not be pretty without a sensor covering it.

Yes. It can be mounted on a wall. Mount it up high though because smoke rises.

does this unit fit without any drilling/modifications

2 mounting screws and a small hole for the wire are needed. The mounting screw holes may align with holes from prior detectors

I am blocked from shipping this item to a california (although previously i had no problem). why is this unit blocked from shipping to california?
