Great camera but an aggressive app-killing algorithm
I've been using this phone now for a few months.I've had my fair share of high-end Android phones, but also a good amount of budget and mid-rangers too. My previous phone was a Realme 8 Pro; a low-mid range phone that boasted a 108MP main camera and the latest software. I liked it, but there were issues with it that were annoying me; the camera wasn't as great as the megapixel count would have you believe, with no telephoto lens it made anything that required a zoom to be very poor quality. So I did some research. A lot of research. I was prepared to pay for the latest and greatest from Samsung but then found out the UK was only shipping with their in-house Exynos chip, which was sub-par to the Snapdragons used globally. A shame, as the camera was the main focus (no pun intended) for my next phone.I narrowed my search down to a couple of phones: The Oppo Find X5 Pro, and Oneplus 10 Pro. Coincidence that both are sister companies to my existing Realme, but I liked the software, and the camera/performance upgrades appealed to me.And then I saw this one. A few initial reviews confirmed that the camera setup was exactly what I was after - a good main camera, with excellent telephoto options. No dedicated macro lens, but potentially an adequate workaround with the other lenses. So, at nearly £1200 I took the plunge and ordered. The camera, so far, is living up to my expectations - it's giving excellent results in portrait mode, and I love the facility to edit the Bokeh placement after the photo is taken - I'd not seen this before and I like it. Landscapes are full of detail, and close-up shots, although not perfect without a dedicated lens, are certainly good enough. The build quality of the phone is good; the phone comes supplied with a plastic case, which has saved my device already after a couple of drops from waist height.Charging speeds are quick enough to keep even the most impatient person happy; a full charge in just over 30 minutes is plenty. The software is the latest, and Vivo have plans for upgrades to version 13 starting last week - so should be rolling out soon. Vivo provide a lot of customisation options on top of Android, which is always welcome. The phone is fast, and I've had no issues with performance in the slightest. Games seem to run without issues - although I'm not a gamer so cannot comment too much here. However, as I've found with other phones in the past, the option to kill any running app is something that has been really overused here - to the extent of missing notifications on any third-party app because it's not allowed to run in the background. You can manually override these, but it needs to be done in two places for some annoying reason - allow it in only one and you still won't get notifications. I appreciate that leaving everything to just run in the background would lead to ridiculous battery consumption figures, but perhaps we could be asked when installing apps (or setting up a new device) if we want to allow them to run in the background (and explain what this implies).I like this phone. It's a good device, with a lot of features. It runs well even with a lot of apps whitelisted to keep running. The camera is better than most phones I've used before and I'm very happy with that. If I'd used the phone for a couple of months before buying, would I spend so much on it, or would I opt for one of the cheaper options? Hard to say without trying them out too, but I have to say I would probably save some money.TL;DR - this is a really nice phone. Build quality is good, camera excellent, charging is fast and it comes with the latest software. Over-aggressive app-killing is a huge problem.

Perfect if it didn't let itself down
We're all here for the camera so let me get some phone stuff out the way.Software is nice and light but still offers a lot os small stuff sweating customisation. The fingerprint reader is incredible and very useful with shortcuts and the battery life and charge speed are lovely. The camera has some ups and down. Testing against the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra (which I ultimately kept) the phone has mostly brilliant HDR, colours are very true to life and contrast is good. There are some good options too for portrait photography. Where the phone falls a bit is in some of the details. The main sensor doesn't seem to retain quite as much as the Xiaomi, the 8MP periscope is a wasted opportunity as it does good but isn't quite enough to really be used beyond its standard optical range.Video is what does it though.Portrait videoSlow motion 120HDR10+ recordingMovie frame 21:95x zoom videoALL limited to 1080p. The power this has would easily be capable of 4k. It seems the camera is only properly using power in night scenes, and beyond that just doesn't seem to be using its potential quite well enough.A better periscope and some more tuning/process unlocking to the details and video resolutions and this'll be the best. For now it just isn't quite there.

Generated heat may be an issue.
It is well documented that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip generates heat. How much of an issue this will be depends on the usage of the phone. One review on a particular forum complained that the exterior of the phone registered a temperature of40C having played a graphics intensive game for 1.75 hours. As this is not a dedicated gaming phone my reaction was little wonder. There is no denying that this is a very expensive phone with as yet a limited availability. The presentation is understated, but, unlike several other Manufacturers, Vivo provides a charger (UK) together with a USB-C cable, and earbuds. The phone itself appears well made, and is smooth in operation. An initial 20 minute test in bright sunshine involved a mixture of photography, and two short videos at the end of which the phone was only warm to the touch.I used the Zeiss option, and the results were excellent.Compared to cameras on other phones I have used, I was especially impressed by the lightness of touch needed to operate the shutter release, and it's smooth operation.Autofocus appears to be fast, and accurate. The Funtouch 12 overlay is fairly minimal, and easily customisable.I intend to further test the phone to see if the heat generated becomes problematic.I can only suggest that a potential buyer test this phone with an open mind, and see if it satisfies their individual requirements

A massive upgrade!
The media could not be loaded. The Vivo X80 Pro offers incredible performance, a premium design and top-of-the-line specs, such as a 50MP main camera, 3D ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, 80W FlashCharge+, and much more.If you compare this phone to the Galaxy S22 Ultra you soon discover just how many premium features are offered, from the Zeiss lenses (among the best available on the market), to the ability to fully charge the 4700mAh battery in less than 40 minutes. This phone has everything I need.In truth, I’ve mainly used iPhone’s all my life, so switching to an Android device felt a little strange at first, but it was one of the best decisions I’ve made as I can be so much more productive with an Android operating system and exclusive features that won’t make it to iPhone’s for 5 years.
