Is this Rodgers & Hammestein's masterpiece?
The complete book(dialogue)and lyrics of Rodgers & Hammerstein's 1945 Broadway musical. Considered by many critics and audiences to be the greatest show the musical masters ever wrote. Certainly it contains some of the great musical theatre songs: 'The Carousel Waltz' 'Mister Snow' and the famous bench scene culminating in the song 'If I Loved You' considered even by Stephen Sondheim as one of the greatest moments in musicals. Then there is the classic 'Soliloquy' 'June is busting out about all over' Hammerstein's celebration of the wonder of nature and it seasons. It also contains the now football related anthem of Liverpool football club 'You'll Never Walk Alone' apparently when told of this during his life time Rodgers made no comment.Based on Fernc Molnar's 'Liliom' the partners were totally unimpressed at first, about turning it into a musical as they had no feeling for the Hungarian locale, and the fact that it was such a 'downbeat' story for an evening in the theatre. They came round to the idea when Rodgers came up with setting it in 19th Century Maine New England and they could feature local sailors, fishermen and mill workers. They changed the ending to give the leading characters a sense of love and hope for the future creating the anthem of 'You'll Never Walk alone for Christine Johnston who created the role of Nettie Fowler on stage in 1945.They found their way into the story by creating another classic 'Soliloquy' for John Raitt their original Billy Bigelow the name they gave for the original Liliom in the play who sings at first how he will be come a father first to a boy and the as an after thought how he might become a father to a girl and you hear in song how the character totally transforms himself from one kind of human being to another. Both the authors were parents themselves Rodgers the father of two daughters and Hammerstein to three children two boys and a girl. The authors when asked what was the favourite of all their shows stated it was 'carousel' Rodgers stated that he felt Hammerstein had never written more beautiful and meaningful lyrics and for him his score was the most satisfying he had wrote. 'It affects me deeply, every time I see it performed he said.
