Q: How long does it preserve a product? Like hair gel or lotion .

From what I have learned from researching so far Germaben ii is a broad spectrum perservative, meaning it preserves against both mold and bacteria. This perservative will actively perserve a product from anywhere between 12 to 18 months. This includes products such as body butters or whips and emulsified products and in a broad spectrum of cosmetic products. For the preservation of such products listed above this would be a very good perservative to include in your recipe. But for any product that shall be preserved this should indeed be researched for the best solution to the nature of the product. Also I have read this perservative is used For lotion making. Personally I would prefer Optiphen plus for lotion making or any aqueous made solutions and would not recommend this to be used as a perservative in aqueous made solutions.

Q: How much should you use for a product? For example, if I made a jar of whipped shea butter thats 8 oz, how much preservative should I use?

You should use UP TO 1% of the total weight/volume of the product you are putting it in. Recommended dosage is between 0.05% and 1% of the total volume of the product. So, if you product is 8 oz, you should use no more than .08 oz of germaben ii preservative.

Q: Can this product be used for face masks?

I had use this product for a face cream because I had use water & oil, never used it in my mask no need. I highly recommend this product to keep my products good for about 2 years, my body lotion broke down to liquid form ( I feel is due to the hot climate) but was still good to use, no discolour, odour, or fungus.

Q: is This like optiphen?

Both are broad spectrum preservatives. Optiphen contains Phenoxyethanol + Sorbic Acid. Germaben II contains Propylene Glycol (and) Diazolidinyl Urea (and) Methylparaben (and) Propylparaben
