NOT just another homesteading book
I probably buy just about every homesteading and permaculture book that comes out, always looking for those little nuggets of information that I can apply to my own homestead. A lot of these books tend to blend together after a while but Sophie McKay's book is definitely a refreshing entry in the category. It is well-written and edited with lots of practical information presented in a clear manner. For people just getting introduced to permaculture, this is an excellent place to start and may be all you need to get going. I especially appreciate the sections on soil health and composting since those are things that often get downplayed by many people but are so important in a permaculture setting. Soil health can be an incredibly complex topic, but this book provides some good basics on that topic. If you are interested in permaculture, this book is a great one to have on your bookshelf!

Good book to explain permaculture
Long on philosophy, short on specifics. Excellent book to explain permaculture with some good examples. You will need to work out what to plant yourself or get a garden planner that uses this system. Just bought the author's planner but hasn't come yet. I will update when I receive it.Update: I received the garden planning book and it is better than most I have seen. It walks you though the process from start to finish. I saw Bill Mollison's book (revised 1997) on Amazon. 576 pages! Good book, but not for everyone.

Great for beginners!
I learned so much from this! I think if you already have a basic understanding of permaculture it may be too elementary, but I had literally no idea what it was or how it might be different from the ordinary gardening approach (that I had failed at repeatedly) when I ordered it so it was perfect!! I have several of the pages marked so I can easily reference the list or table.

Basic beginner information
I didn’t find this book to be a practical guide like the title suggests. If you’ve never heard of permaculture, it provides a general understanding of it. I think a little internet searching can get you the same information, but I can also see this book being good for a complete newbie that doesn’t want to do their own research on introductory principles.
