Thirstystone quarries their sandstone for the Coasters in the Southwestern United States using the most environmentally conscious methods to extract the sandstone boulders that will be crafted into Thirstystone coasters. Thirstystone Sandstone Coasters are among the finest in the world, due to their incredible absorbing ability. The unusual nature of the porous sandstone literally absorbs messy drips from beverages without leaking onto furniture. They also do not lose their ability to absorb over time. The Coasters come in a set of 4, with each one being 4" in diameter and 3/8" thick. Each has a cork back so as not to scratch surfaces.

Updated Review -- Colors don't hold up
I have been looking at Thirstystone coasters for a while but just didn't want to spend so much. I finally decided to make the purchase when I saw this design, which is very similar to petroglyphs from an area I used to live and remember fondly. They arrived a little bit damaged -- the edges of a couple of coasters are chipped. I am exchanging them for a new set because one of them is chipped pretty badly. The thing that I guess is the most disappointing is something that I probably should've realized before ordering. The design is exactly the same on each one. They still look pretty cool but it is obvious that they are a set of mass produced coasters. I had hoped there would be different segments of the panel this image is taken from on each coaster, which I think really would've added a lot to the set overall. As far as the functionality is concerned, these are everything I'd hoped for. The do absorb moisture and there is a cork backing that both keeps them from slipping and protects the surface of your furniture. They are heavy and feel sturdy enough to handle an accidental drop or two even though sandstone is notoriously brittle. The way the design has been printed on the surface looks great and very organic. You can feel the natural texture of the stone.UPDATE:After a few weeks of regular use, the colors started changing. The inks have started to kind of separate and there is a dominant bluish tone in places where moisture has soaked in. The design is fading completely in spots. They pretty much look like crap. They still work fantastically, absorbing condensation easily, but I'm really unhappy with how they are wearing. These are too expensive to look so badly, so quickly.

Longevity!
I have had my Thirstystone coasters for about 18 years now. They are still as absorbent as ever! I moved to Utah in 1994 and saw these coasters in the old petroglyph design at a tourist shop in downtown Salt Lake City. I loved the design because they reminded me of the history of this great state and of all the great places here where you can walk right up to petroglyphs and pictographs. I remember thinking these coasters were pricey at the time about $21! Well, they have paid for themselves over and over again through the years! What a great product! They are well made and have been part of my home for a long time. The new petroglyphs pattern is very nice and I think looks like many of the actual petroglyph panels I have been to. I don't mind that all four coasters are the same pattern and won't deduct stars for that. The sandstone is highly absorbent and if they get sticky from drinks you can simply scrub them with soapy water and a brush, rinse and let them dry. They are as good as new. I think I might have to get this new pattern to go along with my old coasters so I will have plenty for all my guests.

Thristing For Quality
The protective and absorptive qualities are fine, the print is so so . The image is nothing more than an ink stamp type of print. A little blurry, and more indigo colored than the image shown. Also, inconsistent with the others in the set. Other thirsty stone coasters I own have a higher quality "painted on" image that is clear and crisp. Still acceptable if you love the petroglyph design, but image quality could be better :(

great product
They work very well. Am not so excited about the color, a little more sandstoney would have been more to my taste, but then I grew up here where the sandstone is red.
