Sylvanas (World of Warcraft)

As a solid player of World of Warcraft for the past 11 years, I have thoroughly enjoyed learning about lore and characters as much as playing the game. I admit, Sylvanas has always been a mystery to me, her motivations, her plans, her desires, and so it's been hard to interact (so to speak) with her. But finally, with this book, we get a clear, solid look at her as she moves from being playful child to Banshee Queen, with several changes along the way. The book is engaging, bright, and full of Golden's talent for creating cinematics in your head as you read the words on the page. The story is full of bittersweet moments, innocence, heart-wrenching grief, joy, laughter, and pure loyalty. Even though some of what Sylvanas has done is unforgivable, you at least understand why she did it.If I have any issue with the book, it's the same issue I have with most things in the Warcraft universe: time. The book (and the universe in general), is not clear on the passage of time, often one or two words suggesting it's been 'a bit' or 'a while' since the previous chapter. In some cases, there are time jumps from paragraph to paragraph, causing a bit of a 'wait a moment' while reading. There's at least one part to me where we jump right into the middle of a conversation taking place and then jump right out again. I like the idea, but without any time context, it came off as a scene Golden wanted to write but forgot to flesh out.I overall rate this 4.5 stars, with the.5 star being taken off for the time issue. I very much look forward to Golden's next book and hearing this one read by Sylvanas's voice actor herself: Patty Mattson!

Though I had my doubts with how the character would be portrayed in the book, I quickly found myself invested in every page, always wanting more. Feeling as though I was Sylvanas in many situations, Christie Golden has done an amazing job at portraying the Former Ranger General's emotions in such a way that I felt them as well.
