Q: Is extra caution needed for table surfaces to prevent damage? Or is the pad adequate for protection?

I'm using it on a wood table and no problem.

Q: Does the iron pad stitch pattern show on the clothes being ironed?

It does not, I primarily use it when I iron kaki pants and dress shirts.

Q: I cannot see any reason or advantage to having it quilted instead of smooth. Do the diamond shapes show when ironing thin fabrics?

I usually use it to do a quick iron for cotton dress shirts or pants but have never had a problem. It's really handy when you're in a hurry and don't want to haul the ironing board out.
