Treasure of the Four Crowns (3-D Special Edition)

The cult classic finally on Blu Ray and in widescreen!
After many years of having to see this film in the only pan and scan 4:3 version, Treasure Of The Four Crowns has been given the restoration it has long deserved. Yes, this movie is very corny, cheesy and hokey, but that is where it's charm lives. Part of the early 80s 3D craze that producer, actor Tony Anthony helped bring about. Before this there was the 1981 3D western Comin' At Ya! that brought about a whole new way of enjoying a 3D film. Two years after being bombarded with so many films from so many studios, Treasure was released in 1983 when the craze was dying down. Clearly a nod and dare say a rip off of Raiders Of The Lost Ark, this was Tony Anthony's last film as an actor after retiring and going off to become a producer. KL studios has done a great job in restoring this film in it's original widescreen version, the first since it's original release. In 2022, it is still a fun, crazy ride to enjoy. And if you have never seen this before, prepare yourself for a real gem of campiness and crazy 3D fun!

1980's 3D Revisited
The media could not be loaded. before Jaws 3D was released, there was Treasure of the Four Crowns. The star Tony Anthony made a series of 3D films that began with Coming At You and progressed to Treasure of the Four Crowns. The Blu-Ray doesn't give the process as much depth as it deserves because in the 1990s, they released a process called LCS (Line Sequential Process) that really brought dynamic realism to the films. Blu-Ray is a cheap imitation but worth keeping if you love 3-D movies.

When cinema had no limits...of good taste.. (Kino Lorber Blu-ray)
Tony Anthony (what a name!) is one of those little stars who have established their names by trying different things to promote his films. He was first the "foreign gunslinger" in three broke westerns weakly imitating those of Leone among others. And yet these gave him unexpected recognition among the public. Then came the happy (or unfortunate) idea of showing his films in 3-D version. And it worked too! They're far from masterpieces (some might say duds), but some of us enjoy revisiting them for nostalgia's sake in the best possible visual quality. And if we are offered a 3-D copy as a bonus, I say: why not!?Kino Lorber spoils us with this blu-ray, certainly imperfect, but very enjoyable for those who experienced this glorious era of B or Z series; and all the media tricks that accompanied them to sell us a great show.Nostalgia! Nostalgia! It's magic! ;-)

Check out this film on You-Tube!
I saw this film in 1983 and I loved it. Some 15 minutes of this film have been posted on You-Tube and I can't believe how much I remember, even though it was 25 years ago that I saw it. I particularly remember how good the soundtrack music was. (no wonder--the composer is none other than Morricone!) I thought the music sounded like Wagner's Tannhauser Overture and whenever I hear that piece I think of the Treasure of the 4 Crowns. This is the last 3D film made that anybody can remember, until the awful Spy-Kids in 3d and the recent Beowulf. According to Wikipedia, this film was rushed into production by Cannon films (remember them?) after the success of "Comin at Ya". I remember taking the bus down Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles. Cannon films had a building at the intersection of Wilshire and La Cienega. After a while, the Cannon logo disappeared and was replaced with "Pathe Films". After a while, another name appeared on the building, so a lot of turmoil must have been taking place in the film industry during the 1980's (the era of the VHS tape and before the internet). Needless to say, I wish this film were on DVD!

Interesting B Movie in 3D. Good Effects.
For a B movie, this one isn't bad. Interesting story and cool special effects, actually done in real life. Of course, being in 3D, there are lots of in-your-face moments that add to the excitement of the film. I found the final part of the film suspenseful and really good. Much of the effects are pyrotechnics, brilliantly accomplished and thrilling in 3D. Treasure of the Four Crowns is best watched in 3D. I enjoyed the real 3D version, but an anaglyph version (using the included red/blue lens glasses) is presented for those without a 3DTV and the Blu-Ray also has a 2D version. In 2D, it will be quite obvious where the 3D effects are used the most.So why the 3-star rating? Although the movie is quite good, I was very distracted by the debris on the camera lens throughout the film. There were big specks, sometimes right in the middle of the actor's face, and an unbelievable amount of lens dirt in many scenes. It's very bad in the 3D version and is terribly distracting during the film. Apparently, lens cleaning was not a priority, but these large debris spots had to have been seen when the movie was being shot. I have never seen anything this bad in any other movie I've seen. It's a shame that it takes so much away from the movie, in my opinion. I give the movie itself a 4-star for entertainment, effects and plot. The acting is fairly good for a B movie. This is a pretty good film and worth a watch. It's kind of like the old Saturday afternoon movies that used to be on TV in the 1970s. There are a lot of neat special effects to enjoy, even in 2D. I do recommend giving this a watch. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Must have for any collector of 80's Nostalgia Camp!
I saw this movie back in the 80's and it was very campy and I couldn't wait to add this to my collect. This movie is an adventure movie that is in 3D. The transfer to Blu-ray is decent and the sound quality is good. The story is so campy but enjoyable. This movie is in the same vain as Raider of the Lost Ark but low budget. It's a nostalgia movie from my childhood so it was worth the wait and purchase.

3-D
This Disc is worth getting if you are interesting in 3-D. It has stand out effects from the word go ! The main actor also stars in another 3-D disc called Comin’ at Ya, which is on a par with this one. As a 3-D fan I thoroughly enjoyed this disc.
