My partner and I love our apartment, but water shutdowns in the building for maintenance tend to cause blockages. We tried using lye instead of waiting for maintenance staff to snake the line, and it worked well. The Red Devil brand is as legitimate as everyone says and is every bit as pure as stated.. however, lye is dangerous to handle, so wear protective gear (gloves, safety goggles), ALWAYS pour lye into water (NOT the other way around), ensure good ventilation, and do not use aluminum or wood utensils unless they can be disposed of immediately afterwards. For a blocked sink, mix 4-8oz of lye with 2 cups of water by stirring until clear (be careful as the reaction is exothermic, gets very hot!), pour the solution into the sink, let it sit for 20-30min, then check and plunge if necessary. Best of luck, and please remember to exercise caution! Lye is extraordinarily caustic, and burns/dissolves skin on contact.

This "Duda Energy 2 pound Red Devil Lye" is food quality. I have used it successfully for several batches of cold process soap. The physical quality of this is white, medium sized flakes, the same as what I've gotten from another brand. This product is great because it has a more entertaining label than the competition.
