Useful guide
The media could not be loaded. I bought this book to help with my outdoor sketches. The book is roughly divided into three parts. The first talks about the materials. The examples featured mainly uses pencils, ink and watercolour. The second part looks at drawing small subjects like bricks, tiling, textures. The last part explores various building styles. The coverage on perspective is very basic. There are the usual 1, 2 and 3 point perspective all covered in 6 pages. I was expecting more from a book on buildings. There aren't any tips on dealing with tricky perspective, like drawing buildings with vanishing points off the paper. There are plenty of drawing tips accompanying the examples. Those are helpful and the techniques are easy to follow. The downside of the book is it doesn't teach you how to observe proportions, and the examples are mostly on observational drawings. Those with basic drawing knowledge would gain more from this book.(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

Detailed, Descriptive and Delightful!
Richard Taylor explains in depth and great detail how and why he draws the various sketches, which are many. There are several projects, which he fully explains how he created and completed. He covers a wide range of drawing materials, including pencils - graphite and coloured, water-soluble; graphite powder; pen line and wash; pen and colour.I was so impressed with this book, I have since bought 'The Watercolourists's Guide to Painting Buildings' and 'Painting Houses & Gardens in Watercolor' by Richard Taylor, which are both equally excellent with beautiful watercolour illustrations.

same old thing
As an artist who has had the opportunity to study and sell my work in the USA and Europe, I've also had the opportunity to use many references, photos and the like as studies for much of my work as well at the real thing. I don't care for these types of book at all, the are lacking so much, highly recommend the student artist to get out there and see the object for themselves, take a moment to see what you are looking at, find the colors in a cloud and then paint it, allow youself to think, to see, to find. Its not in a book. Go to a park, to the country see it for yourself, paint and draw what you see and feel.

A very nice starting guide for any urban sketchers
Before you can draw a building, you will need a basic understanding of perspective, horisontal or vertical drawing lines, and this book provides splendidly. It's very simple, yet full of useful knowledge and tips.I have already learned a lot and have improved my drawing skills, simply by following the tips and guidelines in this book.

Great introduction and overview for the early artist.
Clearly the author has a passion for buildings and a solid artistic background. For the artist in training and those with simply a love for building and their various styles this is an excellent introduction. The inclusion of drawing materials and approaches is very useful.

a welcome and refreshing change!
I have always been a great line drawing artist but have always failed miserably to fill them in until I bought this book and 'The Watercolourists Guide to Painting Buildings'. I have even managed to make acceptable 'loose' paintings which has been totally impossible for me until now. I have bought several books aimed at helping me with my problems but Mr Taylor's books are the only ones that have actually worked so all credit to him! There are clear instructions in both books and you can actually study his completed pictures to work out hiow he has arrived at the result. At last an author who instructs rather than use his publications as an advertisement for his own work - what a welcome and refreshing change! Very inspiring!
