How thick should a table be in order to securely position the arm and screen?

I've had it clamped to 1/2" desk and it is solid as a rock. The arm tells you where to set the clamp depending on the size of the desk, so yes you can go less than 1" and 1/2" works fine.

Does the installation requires this to be screw to the wall?

It does not require you to attach it to the wall. It is attached to the desk and is very sturdy.
