And Now for Something Completely Different
I had the fun of finding out about Papa Wemba at a surprise appearance he made at an "off Sunset" hot spot in L.A. in the late 90's. At the time, I had recently discovered Peter Gabriel and the Worldbeat sound. Papa and the band took the stage and it was the equivalent of seeing the AfroPop version of James Brown, I kid you not. Just don't expect funk...its more his showmanship and presence that i draw the comparison to.Now with that type of endorsement you would think that the album would appeal to all. It will not. Emotion is a fantastic array of AfroPop songs which have very catchy hooks, and rhythms. The kind that make you want to dance (even if you are like me and have no rhythm). On that nite, I joined the few hundred others on the dance floor and had the most amazing experience.Perhaps it was the beats, more likely it was the passion that Mr. Wemba has when he sings. Ok, so I can't tell you what he is singing about (thank god for liner notes) but I can tell you that it is infectious. Not every song is a hit, they have a feel of a "clean" production, but there will stay with you for a lifetime.Enjoy!

Get ready to Rhumba - Papa Wemba's Realworld album on vinyl
Astonishingly it is 24 years since this first came out. Afro-pop was big in the early 90's and Papa Wemba was leading the way. I had just come back from a trip to (what was then) Zaire and Papa Wemba's music could be heard in every market stall and every bar and every truck from Kisangani to Kinshasa. He was the undisputed King of the Rhumba. Most of his music was only available on cassette and I filled my rucksack with dozens of tapes by the likes of Papa Wemba, Franco, Zaiko Langa Langa and Kanda Bongo Man. When I heard that Realworld had signed Papa Wemba to record an album I was super excited. The Zairoise tapes were excellent and exuberant and wonderful but many were not well recorded with sometimes patchy sound quality.Emotion did not disappoint. Papa Wemba's voice could be heard clearer than ever and the opening tracks Yolele and Mandola are probably as good as it gets and evoke the Congolese sounds perfectly. Personally I could live without the Otis Reading track Fa Fa Fa Fa (Sad Song) as this smacks of trying a bit too hard to achieve the cross over appeal of, say, Youssou N'Dour who achieved amazing international success with 7 Seconds earlier the year this was released. Papa Wemba is too good to need to do this. This is still an excellent album and has stood the test of time. And it is great having it on vinyl too.

Well recorded and what a voice.
Lives up to its name on every track. If you are not involved then you have no soul!
