The Costa Rican Dream
C**S
Posted from the Barra del Colorado
So, I currently manage the "newer and nicer" Lodge named on location 1272 of the Kindle version of Mr. Ricaurte's novel.Except, it is based on a true story. Three Germans did build a lodge on Samay Lagoon. The historical version ends later and differently ("Horst" became unbearable, drove away the clientele, the bank foreclosed and the friends stripped the lodge and tore it down before the bank took possession). However, they remain in the memories of the Barra del Colorado (several of our guides guided their guests fishing and have less than fond memories of "Horst").While the transport situation has gotten better from Caiari Pococi to Puerto Lindo, the road is still mostly unpaved - and every bit of the book struck a resonating cord with me. Even details like walking across the mouth or the Rio del Colorado (could then, can't now), the logistical difficulties (eased, but not much), the remoteness (eased, but not much). And its a great cautionary tale!Added (since the power came back on). Anyone thinking of starting a business in Costa Rica, or buying one, should read this. While a lot has changed - a lot hasn't.
