The most important thing is the air flow direction. The air flow is intended to keep the Air Freshener in place. If your filter has only one crisscrossed side then it can be placed on the other side as long as it is on the side that the air is moving against.

Q: How to install it if I have vertical furnace and the filter slides in horizontal ? The air comes from bottom

Put it on top of the filter. Let gravity hold it in place.
