About 10 inches max. If you try to put anything taller than that it will dislodge the slats under the mattress and either your mattress will be lopsided or you will end up bending your slats. **Q: What is the height of items or containers that can be stored underneath the bed** A: I haven't measured the max but my large rolling luggage fits under just fine **Q: Did anyone else have issues with mattress being bigger than the bed, making mattress sit on handle to lift bed up?** A: No. I used an 11" queen size foam mattress that fits without covering the handle. **Q: Do you need the head board?** A: It comes with it. The whole thing came packed inside the headboard in a zippered compartment. (Bonus hidden storage if you need somewhere to stash something).Everything in the package was very well organized. They even had a section on the hardware labelled "extra parts" but I didn't need them as they had exactly the right amount. The instructions were well written and easy to follow. They even included a ratcheting Allen wrench! The lifting action with the gas shocks works great too. It's super nice to be able to store stuff under the mattress, and a lot more stuff fits with this style as opposed to drawers, and honestly it works better anyways, since you can put the bed against a wall and still open it.The frame and headboard are on the short side, which doesn't bother us, but some people may not like. Especially without a box spring, which you can't use with this frame even if you wanted. We prefer mattresses without box springs anyways, so that isn't a negative in my mind.The only gripe that I have with the frame is the design of the handle to lift the bed up and down. The way it's mounted, it can move a little so it feels like the handle is loose when it isn't.
