Historically accurate for the most part; compelling reading for all ages!
It's amazing how prolific Mary Pope Osborn is, and this book is proof of it by itself. It's often difficult to build tension in a book, especially when the main characters hang out with wizards and can use magic at will, but MPO makes this a page-turner with some real challenging situations, and at one point nicely turns the "let's use magic to get out of this" trope on its head. A longer book than usual will find that you can use it as bedtime reading over several nights, and finding a place at which to stop becomes the trick in that scenario! Historicity makes a huge difference, and it can even be used as a starting point for lessons regarding what happened in Europe during the war. (Obviously that part wouldn''t be done just before bed!) If you're looking for a great read for curious children, you can't go wrong here.

8 year old grandson loves these books.
I am not going to lie. As much as my 8 year old grandson loves these books it doesn’t make him love reading over any over of his pursuits, like playing on his Switch. That would be a miracle I don’t think any book could pull off. But during his mandated reading time at home he often spontaneously says “Nanny I love these books, they are so interesting you couldn’t have picked any better books for me if I have to read.” These books spark many conversations about the events or items described in the books. I use the internet to find images or videos about things that he has trouble visioning, like the the gladiator’s chariots or locations like Galveston Island and it’s surrounding waters. Thank you so much for these books!

The little boy I gifted this book was delighted
I have to admit I didn’t get a chance to read it because the precious little boy I bought it for chose it, gave me the title and was thrilled when I gave it to him. He is 8 and very smart.

Longer Chapters and Higher Reading Level
We love the Magic Tree House Series. We have read each book from the original series and the Merlin's Missions set. We recently came across this at the library and I wanted to buy it for our collection. The book is longer and the text is more difficult. I read them together with my five-year-old so I am able to work through the text but I could see that an early reader familiar with the series may have difficulty. The chapters are longer and the story line doesn't progress as quickly as the other books. We do enjoy it but preferred the original and Merlin Missions.

Awesome series and great kid-appropriate introduction to WWII
My 8 year old son loves this series and has a big interest in military history. This was a great glimpse into WWII that was age appropriate.
