David Copperfield (Macmillan Collector's Library)

Tiny book hard to hold and read
While I love David Copperfield, the story is lovely, the actual book itself is very small and thick and hard to hold and hard to read the small print. I returned it for that reason and found another one. I was just looking for a regular sized book and this is very small ...so beware.

Call is fantastic
This review is about the actual object: the book itself (and not the story) The printing of the book is fantastic super wonderful I love it. The edges are smooth the binding is strong as illustrations are nice it’s a lot of words all in a very small compact form not much bigger than an iPhone. I can put it in my pocket and carry it with me so for one times I have to wait I can just read a little bit instead of being constantly tethered to this iPhone screen. I will buy more of these small classics to add my library because there’s nothing like a good book and a good story.

One of those books that lives on inside of you. A treasure
Although I am a former English teacher and of course a. College English major, I had never read David Copperfield. I read it for my book club and I am so very glad I did. There are too many things I loved about this book to give it a fair review. Suffice it to say it was the characters. It was very long and some of my friends gave up, but I really loved this book. It's one of those books that lives on inside of you.

Product "New" but damaged and extremely tiny
I made the mistake not reading the description - this is a very, very tiny book. And it was falling apart on the inside when it arrived.I rated this 4 stars because the story is good but the binding is horrible.

Delightful
I’ve revisited David Copperfield some 60 years having first read it in high school. The interval has given me a greater appreciation of Dickens's mastery of the English language and insight into the human condition. In some ways the kindle edition is more readable than the print edition. The type is larger, and one can instantly define the more obscure vocabulary of the novel. David Copperfield is an old friend worth meeting again.

An excellent abridgment (but still abridged)
I prefer unabridged novels. And I was disappointed when I learned this version was not upfront that it was edited. I ended up reading the full version, but I found that Dickens drones on a bit in the second half at times, and this version does an admirable job of lightly limiting those more boring passages. I also found myself pining for the delightfully droll illustrations found within. So an efficient but still thorough way to read this humorous, touching, and ennobling novel.note to publisher: the emigrants sketch is incorrect--please fix.

Illustration Too Few
I was looking for the type of volume that would entice our young grandchildren to make the leap into'chapter books". The illustrations are okay but hey are too far and in between."

do not buy this
The volume was beautifully bound with gold edges to the pages and a pretty ribbon marker. It is however clearly not intended for the purpose of reading. There are 1264 pages and the book measures 4" by 6" by 2" - i.e. virtually a brick, and extremely awkward should you wish to indulge in the occupation for which books are normally produced. There is a shocking example of careless production in this so-called Collector's Library edition. It contains illustrations by 'Phiz', including, on p. 123, 'My musical breakfast', where David is shown in an almshouse with Mr Mell playing the flute to his old mother. On p. 1161 the identical engraving appears under the title (sideways on to the margin) 'The emigrants'. Presumably the outward appearance of the volume - perhaps conceived as an attractive base for a table lamp - was all that mattered to the staff at Macmillan. Overall quite disgraceful.

A classic in a handy size
Have never read a classic so thought I would start with David Copperfield. Rather a lot of pages but will work through (not in one sitting).Nice book.

A classic for today
As I am about to see the new film of David Copperfield, and hearing that it departs significantly from the book, decided to re- read the book. I had forgotten what a splendid story it is, the clear individuality of the characters and the twists of plot are mesmerising, I couldn't put the wretched book down!

Lovely book
Valentine's present for my husband and he loved it. Really sweet little book. Print quite small though so will probably download and keep the book on the shelf!

Excellent Presentation!
I thought it was a clever idea to size the book down to a comfortable fit for a childs hands. Attractive cover and a good size print. Delighted with the overall appearance of the book.
