Hearing God Bible Study (IVP Signature Bible Studies) Review: Great read! - Great written book. I recommend also getting the other book that goes with the study. Review: Good Bible study if you don't like Willard. - This study indicates a fundamentalist evangelical foundation that conflicts with much of what Willard says in his book. For example, study session three says to prepare by reading chapters 4,5,and 6 of Willard's book. The study then begins with the statement, "The Bible expresses the mind of God, since God himself speaks to us through its pages." The the student is directed to Psalm 19, verses 7 to 14. These verses plainly affirm the qualities of the Lord's law, statutes, precepts, commands, and fear are all perfect, trustworthy, right, radiant, and pure. But the study says 'Fear of the Lord is not about having feelings of terror, but . . . respect for God." This ignores the actual Psalm which speaks about the qualities of the Lord, not the listener. Psalm 19 is not about my fear any more than it is about any commands I may issue. The study guide avoids the many times Willard says in the chapters for this study session that God speaks to us best in his own still small voice directly to us, with meaning that is plain and direct. I heartily recommend careful study of Willard's book. This study guide is not a clear route to understanding Willard, or conversing with God.
