Caldwell Steady Rest NXT Adjustable

I'll give this 5 stars, because it's cheap, does the job, and should last a while if gently used. Inside the box are all the parts and detailed assembly instructions, which include photographs (that's a refreshing change). Out of all the parts, I had 2 small issues when putting it together. 1. One of the included screws had no head. Obviously, they are mass-produced. I replaced that screw with one of my own, no biggie, and it's not worth taking a star off for that. 2. When connecting the (green) bridge between the front and rear rest, the rear bolts would not thread. I thought I had a problem, but I switched the bridge around (180 degrees), now the front was the back, the back the front, and all 4 bolts fitted nicely. Bear that in mind. Don't force anything to fit; this isn't made out of metal, it's 100% plastic. Once assembled, I rested my rifle, and it was a good fit. I'm using this for air rifles, so it shouldn't be a problem with recoil. Given the quality of plastics used, I expect this to last a while. I would recommend this product. (As for the negative reviews, remember, this was under $40! You're saving a lot of money and this product still does it's job well).

The Caldwell steady rest NXT offers good quality at a small price. Worked great At shooting range. Was steady. Adjusted easily. Was easy to install the six screws to put it together yet I would have preferred it came already put together. Looks a bit flimsy but works nicely. The light weight is a big plus for me. I had to pad the underside bridge edges as they were sharp enough to possibly cut oneself when carrying it holding the bridge area. Rounded edges all around the bottom would eliminate the cutting self problem. Overall the rest is a good buy for me. Better than my sand bags and much easier to adjust. Don't abuse this rest and should serve one well for years. Happy shooting.

I like products that are well designed and well made. This rest is well designed and works as promoted by the manufacturer but is a bit flimsy in my opinion. It is plastic which is ok but it is thin plastic and the was the two rest pieces join is a weak spot. Not that one is going to be rough with the rest but you are talking about a shooting rest and that does involve some degree of potentially rough use. I would prefer one made from metal. Aluminum would be lightweight and probably last much longer. The rest is not expensive so I guess you get what you pay for.

Great value for occasional shooting. It would not be something for someone shooting a lot as it is very light and I feel would probably be torn up easily with heavy use.

Very steady platform for sighting in your rifles for dear season or just plinking.

Its made of plastic so its lightweight and easy to carry around. It has rubber feet on the bottom that grip to most slick surfaces and doesn't seem to move around much. It seems to be a good length, I don't have a ton of guns but I have a wide variety of guns and have not found one that won't fit in it. If you have the need to adjust the length just remove the four thumb screws and take out the middle section and the front and back can be placed anywhere (exactly like shooting bags). You can also remove the middle section and use the front rest for pistol shooting. The front rest has quite a bit of elevation adjustment but if you are like me and don't have a professional shooting table, when I need more adjustment, I use boards under the front and/or back to achieve the desired position. The cradles are deep enough to hold the gun steady. I have mounted four scopes on guns and adjusted three others and have not had a problem with movement. I have shot small, medium and large caliber rifles and handguns along with shotguns using this rest and have not had a problem. The only complaint I have is that once you have the front elevation adjusted properly, you get a small amount of left to right movement when you tighten the thumb screw to lock it in place. Not a big deal, just move the rest left or right and its lined up and ready to go. Is this the best rest on the market? No. Is this the worst rest on the market? I don't know since this is only the second rest I have ever used, but I would have to say, no. I'm not a marksman or a professional shooter so this rest does what I need and for the money I spent on it, it does a good enough job to make me happy and not want something different.
