I'd say about 5 inches at the tallest. It was a really good buy in my opinion. I gave it as a gift. My niece was very happy with it.

Does the paint contain lead or any other hazardous substances?

Not what I know of. These aren't exactly toys, and I wouldn't give it to a child under 5 as they'd end up loosing dolls I'm sure. This is more for collectors of nesting dolls, then for small children to play with.
