The R4 came highly recommended from several radar detector forums if you don't need anything fancy or unnecessary bills and whistles.The uniden update software actually has the ability to be installed on a Mac or PC 👍 and uniden offers regular updates free of charge.There R4 has extremely good range, and once you learn the frequencies in your area you'll know what to primarily listen for. At 85, I was getting initial alerts and after 2 to 3 minutes I'd eventually come across the trooper sitting in the median or driving towards me. I did discover that it will pick up any radar within your immediate vicinity so if you pass a cross street it will get the radar that is perpendicular to you.I do drive through several towns with speed cameras and every time it is alerted me.If you need extra arrows bells and whistles get the r7 or R8. If you just want a highly effective unit get the r4 and then you have the ability to Bluetooth pair to your cell phone Highway app.Lastly there is the ability to utilize your computer to go through and modify all the settings. It's pretty easy but there are probably 100 plus settings that you can manipulate via a laptop.

This Uniden R4 is the best bang for the buck. If you don't need the arrows, then this detector is for you. The range is incredible. It has picked up radar signals from as far away as 4-5 miles on very flat terrain. (I live in west Texas where there are no hills or many curves). On more curvy and hilly terrain, it has picked up as far as 2-3 miles. Plenty of time to save you a ticket. I wouldn't trust anything else for protection. Only thing it can't detect as all radar detectors can't, is the eye in the sky. Purchase it. You won't be dissapointed.

I have have used the R4 for over a year and agree with others that it is a great RD ... range, auto mute, gps and customization are excellent. When purchased, I moved my older generation Escort to my wife's car -- it still works ok -- but then felt guilty and bought a second Uniden R4 because it is so much better ... best detector for $$$ in my opinion.
