This airplant is a unique low maintenance plant. ITstarts life with shades of green, yellow, and red which all deepen as the plant matures and enters its bloom cycle. Over time the Ionantha rubra will create "pups" and will eventually form a clump. This little air plant is small on size but big on appearance! Light: Lighting for Tillandsias should be bright but filtered (April - October). They should not be left in the direct sun in the summer months (this will cause the plant to become sunburned). Tillandsias love direct sun (November - March). Tillandsias may be grown in the house directly in front of a window. Fresh moving air is advisable, but remember, the most important care need is bright filtered light. Water: Option 1) Mist your plant every 4-5 days with ONE Spray for tiny globes, 2-3 sprays for globes 3-5 inches, more if the plant is in a large open globe. more often in a hot, dry environment; less often in a cool, humid one. The key is to judge the drying time, the smaller the globe, the less circulation, the longer the plant will hold the moisture. If you over water the plant will die. Tillandsias will not survive in standing water. Option 2) Especially for bigger plants Fill a basin, bowl, or sink with water and dunk your air plants twice a month for 10 minutes. Then spread them on a towel to dry. Plants should be given enough light and air circulation to dry in no longer than 4 hours after watering. Temperature: Optimum temperature range for tillandsias is 50 - 90 degrees F.
