I do NOT require a case as rugged as this one! I wanted it, however, because our family will be taking a cruise and we have experienced wet luggage from common carriers leaving bags outdoors before loading them into cargo bays. I figure this case will last the rest of my lifetime and now at least some of our clothes will stay dry if we get hit by thunderstorms on the day we board our next ship.Unless I had very delicate equipment, I wouldn't buy this for air travel. Most people are likely to pack it full and have an overweight bag as a result. The 955 empty weighs 18.5 lbs, and my favorite airline charges $100 extra for any bag weighing 50+ lbs. The linear dimensions of this bag ARE within the standard size bag limits for my chosen airline. (Always check before flying with a big bag; there is no universal standard for size or weight limits!!!)That said, I don't think the Nanuk 955 would suffer from being used as luggage for users who can afford the excess weight fee or those packing lightweight stuff inside. Every moving part feels sturdy, solid, reliable. This would be a great suitcase to take on a holiday trip when, say, your kids will get Lego sets in bulky boxes from grandparents. You could bring home lots of gifts without crushing "collectible" packaging.One particular thing I love about the Nanuk 955 is the retractable handle that locks down when closed. It has a little latch to release it, and I can work it with arthritis in my hands. (I struggle to get into two small Pelican boxes I own, a 1020 and 1060.) There are no velcro strips or zippers waiting to fail on this baby.I bought the color that was cheapest: black. (Boring!) But I plan to buy stickers as I travel and slap them on the case like the decals on old fashioned steamer trunks. That's the kind of luggage I was looking to duplicate for modern times: large, protective, made to last.According to a random guy online who claims to have measured the clearance, this case SHOULD slide under a cruise ship bed on the line/ship we're taking. The Nanuk 955 is just under 1 ft "tall" when lying on its handle/wheel side to slide under furniture. We'll see! It's other dimensions are 25.6" x 20" and my own casual measurements match the published spec sheet for the 955 case.My teenager who carried this into the house for me thought at first glance that I'd bought a new cooler, so that gives a rough idea of how large this case it. It is not unlike moving my heavy Yeti (Tundra 45 model) cooler around in bulk and unwieldy-ness, but the wheels help a lot when stairs aren't an issue.I bought the 955 without foam or interior fittings. Running a hand around the inside, I don't feel any sharp/rough edges that would damage clothing packed directly inside, but I will use packing cubes as that's how I separate items for my family when we travel together.An article online suggested that Nanuk was equivalent in quality to Pelican, sometimes at better prices. Since the same author found Nanuk's latches easier to work--a characterization with which I agree!--this was the better choice for my purposes.The same piece also advised that Seahorse cases were almost as high quality at a lower price, so I ordered two discounted colors of Seahorse 920 for my two kids to use on the same trip. Seahorse also offered latches I find better than Pelican's (but not quite as good as Nanuk), and those bags also feel completely sufficient to use as luggage.
