Could this product be used in a see thru fireplace?

I don't know if you would see the flame since it's a plug-in style. The flame reflects off the back wall of fireplace. If your fireplace is see through you might not get the reflection of the flame. Not sure if it would seem real without the back wall.

Does the lighted numbers on the display turn off? So that you don't see them on the front

We just hooked up the fireplace last week, and found it very satisfactory. We cleaned and painted flat black to the entire firebox prior to installing the unit. There are no lighted numbers on the front. There are two buttons and a dial on the side of the fireplace. When you reach in and along the side of the unit, the first button turns on the lights making the logs look very realistic. The second button back turns on the infrared heater, and there is a rectangular light near the bottom of the unit. This is maybe where you think you are seeing numbers, but there are no numbers - - just the glow of the heat generator. Behind the two buttons is a dial. Turning this dial clockwise increases the heat out-put. The room we have this in is about 330 sq ft, with one side having lots of glass. The unit makes good heat, but not amazing heat. It is a good supplement to the room heater.
