ESV Prayer Journal: 30 Days on Humility (Paperback)

Sweet!
This is a sweet journal with daily prompts for prayer. Each week focuses on a new passage, and has reflection/teaching in the beginning of the week. I am currently doing this with a group of girls in my Bible Study and it’s a great way to stay connected while independently working through this.

Beautiful
I love this journal. It is like a flimsy paperback situation but still worth the price. This is an important thing to study ❤️

Nice Topical Prayer Journal, Focused on Humbleness
I selected this prayer journal for my wife. She appreciates small journals like these that guide her through a specific Biblical topic. Humbleness is not an area where she struggles, though the topic is still just as important. So far, this has proven to be a good resource. This prayer journal is very much like a daily devotional for 30 days, though the format is a little different than I have previously seen. The weeks are presented as five days, not seven, so it fits into a Monday-Friday work week. There’s nothing wrong with this, but it is unusual and not at all expected. More interesting, instead of presenting a passage of Scripture every day, each passage is given at the beginning of each week and is discussed in the subsequent five days associated with that week. Again, there’s nothing wrong with this but it’s different than expected. The Scripture passages are quoted from the English Standard Version (ESV) which is a well-respected translation. Each day presents a short discussion followed by ruled lines for writing. Most discussion sections are approximately a page, though sometimes they go a little over or under. These are bite-sides passages are meant to get the reader to think about the passage from the week’s introduction as it relates to humility. On a few occasions the daily passage also quotes additional passages to support the “main” Scripture block. The typeface is easy to read and the pages are an off-white color, which is easier on the eyes. And, there is modest amount of nicely done artwork at the beginning of each week to make the book prettier. So far, we have no complaints with this little devotional/prayer journal. The writing is very Biblically based and the Scripture is quoted from a reputable translation. The way the discussion is arranged with respect to how the main passages are presented and how the weeks are scheduled for five days instead of seven are both unusual but certainly not bad. If you’re looking for a prayer journal that focuses on the specific topic of humility, this is a good resource.

Quick study, solid content
First, I'll review the physical qualities of the journal. It's lightweight and small. I like the texture of the cover and the feel of the book in my hands. It's pretty light and can be easily put in a medium sized purse or bag. It's not a heavy duty book, so I have noticed that just carrying it around has caused the corners at the binding to become a bit dinged up. The artwork is beautiful. The margins are large enough to take notes, and there's plenty of room at the end of each day's study for journaling. The print seems to be a good size, and there's no glare on the pages so it's easy to read.As for the content... It seems to be Biblically sound and is certainly a topic beneficial to all. Humility -- definitely an area in which I can improve. This journal is a gentle reminder, more like a conversation with a trusted friend. It's not fire and brimstone in your face. But it is honest.I have come across a couple of typos, but nothing that would disrupt the process under normal circumstances. Because I was reading knowing that I would also be writing a review, I did spend some extra time reading and re-reading to really be sure it was an error. At one point the reader is asked to read Philippians 2: 3-11 and later asked to meditate on verses 2 -3. Verse two wasn't part of the reading, though I feel the study would have made more sense at that point if it had been. It's a small thing and it didn't make the study any less Biblical, nor did it make it any less readable. I just pulled out my Bible app and expanded the text. But I suppose it slowed the process a bit. At another point the author says, "Even in human flesh, Jesus is both God fully God and fully man." I suspect it should have read "... Jesus is both fully God and fully man." It's not a big deal, I just want folks to know that I am giving a four star review not because the content isn't good, but because the editing wasn't perfect. Each day's study is quite quick. This would have been a great tool when my kids were still little and I always felt tired and strapped for time. Now, I generally make time for something longer. The journal is set up in weeks, and broken down into days. It is a five day week, presumably intended for weekends off, but it really can be any two days. I would not recommend this as a group study, because I don't feel like there's enough content for a long discussion, but it might be great for a couple of friends to get together and discuss how to put each point into action.I'm giving this four stars based on what it is. It is a quick study with Biblical content. If you're looking for something that will give you hours of content to ponder, this isn't it. This is asking you to think about, meditate on, and pray through a few verses a day. It is not long and it is not intellectually challenging. It is Biblical and it can certainly be a challenge to our characters.
