Q: Do I need to open the headrest to install this ?

Jane,This item was not designed to go around headrest posts, this item is designed to use with your garment hooks in your car giving you more garment hanging space.

Q: My car drop down garment hook is very small. How wide is the garment hook?

The garment hook is 1 3/8 inches at the narrowest location. We have a Ram 1500 and use the hooks at the top of the rear window. If I leave the seat down clothes hang much better. If I put it up the clothes hang awkwardly. I can usually get 8-10 clothes hangers on mine. I like it well enough I am planning to order another one for the other side (too many clothes on our last trip for one of these!).

We use these every time we travel by car. They fit over the car handle bars and usually hang behind the driver.
