My First Piano: Learn To Play: Kids

This was a gift for a 6 year old girl who is also a very good reader. It was given along with a keyboard. While reading it on her own, the beginning of the book jumped right into whole notes and half notes, and she was unfamiliar with these terms. Her mom took over, and now they are having "piano lessons" with this book daily, and mom is leading her through. After my favorite 6 year old learns the lesson for the day, she happily understands and is playing the piano, and bonus points, she is actually learning to read music as well. Quite a feat for this little book. Well done.

If you want your kids to quickly learn to play a few simple tunes, this is a great book. But they won't progress beyond these few simple tunes, there's not even a Book 2 to follow this book. This does not teach theory, chords, scales, intervals, and all of the things needed to become a real pianist. Depending on your long term goals, you may want to consider a teaching series like the Alfred Books rather than this limited, stand alone book.
