Good read/write speeds. Good for backup.
Completely editing this review because I'm an idiot.I originally tested this with what I thought was a high end USB-C cable and was getting absolutely horrible read and write speeds. Just tested it with another and I'm getting absolutely stellar read and write speeds for a drive with a slow disk on it. Around 125MB/s on average for read and write test. Real world and random read/write when copying large folders with a lot of files is obviously way off the mark from that, but it is definitely quick. Seeing it spike up to 150MB/s during a transfer of a large folder with a bunch of files is impressive for a 5400rpm drive. I bought a refurbished unit hoping that I get a new drive that is less likely to fail. Hopefully I don't run into any of the issues others have had with this drive failing quickly.I started a transfer of an 18.5gb folder with 60k files inside of it (a lot of them incredibly small, which significantly slows down the transfer speed) and it just finished. Probably took about 4 minutes.

It's been working very well for a year
I've been using this hard drive (4TB size) for almost a year now. This beautifully looking hard drive has been really working well.I made a few partitions and used different file systems. Some partitions were for media. Used quite often. It was reliable and fast enough to stream 4k videos without any problems.I made a few more partitions to try out different linux distros. Worked reliably even if I boot up the system from external hdd.It never made any noise and never get overheated. It's a little more expensive than Seagate and WD, but since I have a good experience with this manufacturer, I'm going to buy another one with 8TB.

Will only work plugged diretly into a MAC
Before I purchased this drive I specifically asked Lacie if it would work over a network using time machine. I was told yes. Come to find out, no it won't. Apple products, being Apple products, only like "playing" with their own kind. Unfortunately my Apple router stopped working and had to get a new router. I guess I should be happy the router and external hard drive will work with my Mac. I now have to get another external hard drive for the other computer. While not the solution I was looking for, at least I can now back up both computers. Just wanted MAC users to be aware.

Not for high speed applications
Don’t be fooled by the USB-c connector. The 4 TB drive is just a regular old platter drive. It’s not made for rapid data transfer. I use it as my TimeMachine and it’s perfect of that. It’ll be able to store quite a few full backups. For the price, I’m happy with performance.

LaCie is made by Seagate which makes outstanding hard drives
I use a a 2 TB Segate to back up music, photos and important documents. This is kept in my safe deposit box and updated twice a year. The 4 TM Lacie backs up my Mac. When I leave home for several days the Lacie is secured. Both hard drives are compact any easy to use. Tech support for years after purchase remains outstanding.

Speedy, good drive. Started failing for me after 1 year, 5 months
I bought this back in April 2019. It has worked reliably, but last week it has started to have bad sectors. I'm migrating over to a newer disk now. I am glad I make backups, but it's still a pain. Drives are supposed to last longer than this.

Very compact.
I have had several LaCie hard drives over the years. I use them as backups, so they are only in use for multiple short times. Every one has been reliable for years. This one is larger capacity and smaller than those. Very good!

FALSE ADVERTISING: 10 MB/S TRANSFER SPEED
Description says "up to 5GB/s" for transfer speed. I'm currently restoring macbook pro from a backup and it's going to take over 20 hours because the speed is 10mb/s - that's is 1/500th of the advertised max transfer speed which is absurd. How can you do blatantly mischaracterize a product?

Great piece of kit.
Love it. Works with my MacBook and Windows. Transfer speed is great. It's small, light, easy to travel with and silent. What more do need?

Unreliable
A drive for backing up memories shouldn't die after six months.

Value for money , only hdd with type c .Must have for macbook pro
I purchased it at Rs 10,000 . This product is full value for money . You will not get any 4TB hdd with type c in this price range . I am using it from past 1 year & its working fine . I recommend it for every Macbook pro users . Bcoz macbook have limited ssd space which cant upgradable . I use this hdd for my time machine backups & other archive which i no longer needed on precious macbook's internal ssd .

First Lacie drive that disappoints...
Perhaps the worst of this great brand name drives. Extremely slow by comparison to WD and Seagate. Does not wake and power up in time for the most part. If you have not purchased this, avoid it.
