Anthropoid [DVD]

One of the best WW2 movies I've ever seen. Nothing is candy coated here so be mindful of who else is in the room with you. A must see for any WW2/history enthusiast.

I had not heard of ANTHROPOID and when I first heard the title, I thought it was a science fiction film. Well, that could not be any further from the truth. ANTHROPOID is a WWII drama set in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1942. It's based on a true event of heroism, bravery, patriotism and heartbreaking betrayal. I'm a WWII history buff so I was very interested to see a film based on an event I did not know.The international cast brings heart and soul to this film. Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan head the team of actors that includes many Czech actors. The setting, scenery, costumes and detail take us back to the dark and terrifying days of Prague in 1942. A group of Czech resistance fighters are enlisted to assassinate the head of the Nazi regime in Czechoslovakia. Brutal Reinhard Heydrich is Hitler's third in command and one of the main creators of Hitler's "Final Solution."Our freedom fighters enlist the help of brave local citizens and embark on an impossible mission that can only lead to disaster. It is truly a remarkable tale of dedication and bravery that deserves to be told. Although ANTHROPOID can be slow moving at times, it is visually stunning as it takes us back to a terrifying era in history. There is the lead up to the assassination attempt and the daring effort to escape Prague and certain death at the hands of the Nazi's.Although the story is fascinating, the writer could have given more background information on these heroes who must have known the mass executions that would have occurred in retaliation for the assassination attempt. I'm leaving it up to the viewer to find out if the attempt fails or succeeds. I'm still overwhelmed by the remarkable detail of this film from location to clothing to just about everything.Be sure to watch the extra feature on the Making of ANTHROPOID to learn more about the filming and the effort to be a true to the era as possible. I enjoyed the film despite its flaws. It could have been more fast paced but the overall beauty of the details and the wonderful actors and the tribute to real heroes makes ATHROPOID a must see to anyone interested in WWII history.

NO SPOILER REVIEW!5 StarsThis is my first 5-star rating I've ever given to a movie watched on Amazon Prime (and I watch a lot of them).WOW. WOW. WOW. When this movie ended, man, dang. I mean it set with me for awhile. It was so gripping and emotional. Long time since I've watched a movie that had that kind of residual impact. It was just so intense. Especially the way it all ends (I mean the movie that is)... Man...I almost don't want to say too much and dilute this review with all my comments on the various aspects of the film and such. Suffice to say it delivers on all fronts: storyline, acting, script, production values, action-scenes, there isn't anything that wasn't done well in this film in my opinion... and perhaps even more importantly, if something wasn't done well I just plain didn't notice because I was too on the edge of my seat and totally immersed in suspense along for the ride. I very much felt like I was alongside the characters with them in their situation in the film.What a powerful film. What a movie. Man, this is worth the watch for sure. And could/should be destined to be a classic in the genre of war-films, and most certainly amongst WWII films. This is a hidden gem, if this came out to theaters I didn't know about it, but it most certainly should have!Not to mention, what an inspiring testament to the tenacity, bravery and courage and will of the human spirit. It's almost unbelievable to think this was all real and these people really underwent these circumstances and chose the actions they did! What a shining example of true courage and willing to stand up to evil!Also, I don't know much about history, so this was unintentionally educational and informative. A major event/plot in the course of the WWII drama that I now have some knowledge/awareness about.This is more than worth the watch, but just be prepared to be engaged very intensely!Also, sidenote: there is one scene of torture... it was brutal to watch so FYI if you got kiddos or a light stomach. I had to turn away, I couldn't take it.
