The Perfect Tuning Kit
This tuning kit was exactly what I needed to tune up my old 1918 player piano. The hammer weight was just right and the universal star head was a perfect fit. The kit contains a sturdy wooden handled hammer, 4 rubber mutes, a felt mute, a wooden mute, red felt, screwdrivers, and a tuning fork, all in a compact zippered case. I expect to be using this kit often and am very satisfied with my purchase.

Perfect tool kit for self piano-tuning, maybe for pro.
I’ve tuned my own pianos most of my life. Not that I don’t trust piano tuners, but I’ve had old pianos that just required a lot of attention, and I didn’t want the inconvenience of calling up someone every time I needed that. (Also expensive) I’ve always done it with makeshift tools, mostly of my own making, but which were not easy to use. I’d often resort to using fingernails to sound a single string, even though I had created mutes; it was just too hard to reach with my silly tools. So, I finally decided to get some real tools. I’m amazed at how much easier it is to tune pianos. As you might expect, the tools have evolved over hundreds of years, and they are uniquely suited to the task. Excellent! I give them 4 stars instead of 5, because a few of the tools seem kind of cheap. Maybe they will last; I don’t know. But the leather began to peel off one muting tool, and I do feel like they could be made better. But other tools, notably the socket wrench, are first-rate. There is a little room for improvement, at least. Bear in mind that I’ve never had professional tools. This may be the cheapest set in the world. Or not. I would not know. But I do recommend them, I’ve gotten many tunings out of them so far, and now I’ve even bought the Arthur Reblitz book on piano tuning and repair. Who knows? I may resort to piano tuning for extra income someday! But for now, this is the best for me.I’ve used a tuning fork in the past, but now I use my iPhone and iPad, running the iStroboSoft app. It seems to be the easiest and best for this kind of thing, and it has special settings for making it more sensitive to the lowest notes. Excellent! No other tuner has gotten that right, and most digital tuners pick up harmonics more often than the fundamental, making it hard to get it right. The iStroboSoft app gets them all correct, having a readout that shows the harmonics as well as the fundamental. When you freeze them all, you’ve got it in tune. Of course I use my ear, too, but this eliminates any doubt.I Highly recommend these tools for anyone who tunes their own piano, or for those who are considering going pro. If you do it every day, you may need one or two sturdier mute tools, but most of them will last a long time and hundreds of uses. This will get you started and most of the tools will probably go the whole route for you.
