college student, actually really interesting book
purchased this for a course at my college and at first i thought this book was going to be really boring. this book is actually super interesting! if you like sucking up knowledge, this book is a great way to learn something new. It has the whole IPA alphabet in there and sometimes I use to translate certain texts of mine to my friends just to throw them off :)A good introductory textbook for phonetics, semantics and more.

I wish ,I bought the E-book version of this?
Is it too late to return my book and replace it with the E-book. I don't want to travel with this tome. This book is great, but the size is redoubtable (*OUCHY MY BACK*). Wait, what am I rating here. The quality of the book is a book. I mean tis not busted up or anything. The books is neither notably busted up nor notably wonderfully designed or anything. I bought the book for its content though. HMMM, I don't know what I'm on about. My bad dudes.

University required
I had to buy this book for a class at ASU. While it's not something that I would read on my own even has a language professional, it does explain in-depth a lot of difficult concepts. So great job.

Thorough text for applied linguistics
I use this text for my Intro to Applied Linguistics course. I like the chapter arrangement and especially the practice section at the end of each chapter. The only downside is the size and weight which my students complain about. The etext is now available and a solution to the size.

Great!
This is one of the only textbooks that I wished I bought brand new from the start of the semester! I learned so much from this textbook alone that I know I will keep it as a reference for years to come.

Great book! But NOT for Kindle!
I enjoyed this book for my undergrad-level Linguistics class, so I decided to purchase a Kindle edition for ease of transport. The author inserts humor at appropriate places, and gently eases a novice into the verbiage of linguists. The Kindle edition, however, is an abomination: there's no page numbers, and the organizational tools from the hard copy (headings, numbered lists, text changes, exercises, etc.) just don't translate at all. I've lost my place multiple times, and there's no way to change the horrible typeface. I would highly recommend a HARD COPY of this book!
