Park Tool BBT-9

I have NO IDEA of why I have read so many reviews online about this tool not working. I just took off my SRAM bottom bracket with external bearings, and internal threads, on my touring bike and the metal end of it fit perfectly, did not come loose or jump off the bottom bracket, and allowed me to crank on it to break it loose. It was the original on the bike put on there 9 years ago. The smaller shaped Hollowtech II bottom bracket that I bought came with a little plastic adapter, that fit perfectly into this tool, ( inserted and used so that the "collar" of it faced the bike, to fit better, and allowed the collar to act as a protector against the whole bottom bracket finish. NOTE: that plastic piece only slid in enough to be even and flush with the other side of the tool, but was not a problem at all ) and did not slip, slide, strip, or come flying off as I was torquing down (by feel). I read people having this happen to them and I just, don't, get it. Mine worked perfectly. THEN there is the other plastic end. People talk about how they can't loosen their crank arm "adjusting cap". (they call it dust cap, and even pre-load cap or bolt, but that ain't what it is, maybe they are talking about a way different crank??) I put my tool on my adjusting cap of my Hollowtech II 2 piece crank set non-drive side arm, and turned it hand/finger tight, just to take out any space between the back of the crank arm and face of the bottom bracket. According to specs, this is only suppose to be torqued to 0.7-1.5 N-m!!! (6-13 in. lbs.) Huh? Mine was easy! To take it off, this will be very simple too. Are people NOT loosening the crank arm pinch bolts first before trying to loosen the adjusting cap? The exact opposite of installation? I don't know. What I do know is that I am not buying some long armed tool, or that metal tool with big wings on it to crank the crap out of that small adjusting cap. I mounted my crank arm, checked for looseness, had none, hit the arm with my hand a few times and was getting 3 turns out of it without the weight of the pedals even being on there. COOL TOOL!

If you need it, this is the one. As others have said this one locks on the best and won't slip and scratch anything. I definately found this to be true and can see why this one is better than the others. Wasn't sure about the necessity of the black nut wrench being dirently attached to the end of the handle but yes, it is very nice and beneficial. Two tools in one. Handle is pretty solid and lock up on the BB is probably the best. It got the job done and I was happy I paid a little more to get this one.

Solid investment, stop paying bike shops to do your maintenance

The Park Tool BBT-9 Hollowtech II Bottom Bracket Tool is another well made tool by Park Tool that’ll last a lifetime, well longer than the Hollowtech II BB standard will be around (LOL). Seriously though, this is a well made tool & the rubber coated handle makes it comfortable & secure in hand. The BBT-9 is designed for removing & installing external bearing bottom brackets (BB). One end of the tool fits BB cups & lockrings w/16 notches & that are approximately 44mm across (outside diameter). Some of these are Shimano Hollowtech II, SRAM, Race Face & many others. This end of the BBT-9 can be used on lock rings for disc rotors that have 16 external notches. The other end of the BBT-9 has a plastic tool used on the crank arm adjustment cap on the Hollowtech II set. I found this very awkward to use. With this tool, it requires two hands to do the job that one hand can do. With two hands & the small work area, the cap becomes difficult to see. Maybe I need to flip my bike upside down so I have the crank set up higher. I actually prefer to use a one handed tool like the BBT-10.2. Overall the BBT-9 is a sturdy, well made tool. It’s a must have for the home bike shop to keep clean & maintain your BB. If you’re wondering if it’ll work on your BB, check the Park Tool site, they have a list of BBs it will work on.
