I use the spindle without any difficulty on all rolls I buy. I don't know exact "knob" size that you would insert roll onto but I believe it would not be sufficiently small enough to load roll.

How much space is there between the two vertical bars? And what is the diameter of the bar?

The bars are about the same size as a normal horizontal TP holder. There is just enough space between the vertical bars to slide on a few spare rolls.

Will the base scratch my floor?

No. I have porcelain tile flooring in my bathroom. I bought this to have TP on the other side of my toilet after shoulder surgery. About 6 months later I gave it to my sister when she had hand surgery. She has vinyl flooring and had no scratching either.
