This was a winner both from a little boy perspective and a mom/teacher perspective
We purchased this kit as a Christmas gift for my almost 6 year old son. We home-school and anything that makes science fun and hands on is always a welcome addition. This was one of the first things he wanted to do - what little boy doesn't want to dig in the dirt and find bugs?? The box it comes in is sturdy and attractive. On opening it we perused the very nice activity book and information cards, checked out the super cool looking giant green plaster of Paris bug shaped dig and the dig tools. And of course, little boys are ready to jump right in with both feet and DIG! So off we went....I strongly suggest spreading out a cover of some sort (we used butcher paper) - this is essentially a plaster of Paris material so when you start chipping away at it, dust is going to fly and accumulate. Not a problem, it's part of the fun, but you may not want to do this where there's carpet or on your grandmother's table cloth. The dig form is a hefty green beetle that received a great deal of delighted attention. Points to Dr. Cool for, well, being cool. In fact it was so cool that we sort of hated to tear it up but the lure of real insects won. The digging is fun and did take some work to really work that stuff loose. The bugs are individually and safely encased in resin type material so there's no risk of damaging them by being too enthusiastic with the dig tools. It took him about 45 minutes to dig them all out (to be fair, he stopped to admire each insect as it emerged). The three insects are very nice specimens and well preserved in their clear resin 'stones'. These are small but are well done and were easy to inspect both with the naked eye, a magnifying glass and even under a microscope. And they now have place of honor on my son's "cool stuff we found" shelf and are routinely shown off to visitors. The kit comes with a display backdrop you can put together and display your bugs on as well.I love the included information and activity books. There is in-depth information on the insects found (a fortune beetle, a scorpion and a spiny spider) and a booklet of fun insect themed games such as word searches & mazes to do. This made the kit a really nice complete activity and I appreciate having the extra educational aspect to this. My son enjoyed working on the booklet with his new insect treasures displayed near by. And it's very affordable for the quality and fun it provides. This was a winner both from a little boy perspective and a mom/teacher perspective. We will definitely be looking for Dr. Cool kits again!

My 6 year old received this gift for Christmas. He has been working on the kit on and off for several days and has not quite uncovered anything yet - but thinks it is fun to keep trying! He has one of the insects almost uncovered and is getting very excited. I think this kit would be easy and done very quickly for an older kid - but it is keeping my Kindergartener busy for a few days!

Makes learning fun
I keep forgetting to put up this one. Lol.Real Bug Dig Kit from Discover with Dr Cool. This kit was really cute, really fun, and really educational. Filled with good information in a fun manner. This kit came with a bug shaped digging medium, a plastic digging tool, brush, magnifying glass, an Adventure Guide, and an Activity book! The adventure guide is full of interesting facts about the insects in the kit as well as other cool bugs. It is easy to read and very colorful! You can probably take it outside and use it to find some bugs of your own with a little hands on educational hunt! The activity book as well is very fun but also educational as well. It includes a lot of games and even a quiz which all the answers are easily found in the adventure guide.Once you get through the green outer paint the digging isn't to difficult and as usual if you add a little water it makes it easy to get through.Of course messy as always with these dig kits but that is half the fun!Though I almost felt bad as the beetle shaped brick was cute and I felt a little bad destroying it but it had to be done for the tiny treasures inside. My tiny little insects! In this kit you get 3 creepy crawlers. A spiny orb weaver spider, a fortune beetle, and a scorpion! They look really cool and you can see a lot of details on them. If you like bugs they are pretty cool little things..But when I say tiny I mean tiny!3 real bugs in tiny dots. Don't get me wrong. They are absolutely awesome and very interesting. My only complaint about this kit is that the items inside are so small that a child would definitely lose them pretty quickly if they aren't careful. I almost lost the scorpion as soon as I got them cleaned off.I wish they would have maybe added a cut out page in the activity book for a DIY display box. That way you could put them in a safe spot. But other then that I love this kit so much!I love how much information they contained and how fun they made it.10 of 10 would buy again!Dr. Cool you made bugs cool!

Dig, Discover and Learn with this Excavation Kit.
If your child has interest in bugs, animals, or other craft items like this where you have to "discover" rocks, gemstones, or in this case bugs, then this item is really great. I could see that for some children this item would be more of a novelty (5 minutes of fun) and then toss the stones in a drawer but other children will really enjoy this and want to show off the stones to friends/family, or start a collection. The included booklets with activities and facts were a great addition to this set to not only have the stones with the bugs in them (which is really neat itself) but also to provide information about the bugs so that the children can have a good time and learn.

First grader loved it
Bought this for my "niece" (daughter of a close friend). She loves nature and science. Used my Amazon Prime to send her a package. She loved getting a package. Loved exploring, picking apart the "rock", finding the critters. She looked up the "critters" on her ipad and now she tells everyone who comes to her house (and all the kids at day camp) about them. Great gift for the young scientist or entomologist in your life.

Fun kit, our son enjoyed it
Fun kit, our son enjoyed it. It wasn't too difficult to work into and find the bugs. The actual block itself was shaped like a large beetle and bright green, which was pretty cool. My only complaint was the size of the specimens inside. They all 3 were just small enough to not be able to see too well without the aid of a magnifying glass, and of course the one that came with it didn't actually work well. Overall, cool gift for a kid that likes bugs.

Great activity but too easy
My 6yo loved this set and had no problems completing the task. The only downfall is that he had all three dug out in very little time and then was crushed that the activity was done after checking the mail eagerly for days for it to arrive (wasn't really interested in the activity books). So, in a nutshell, it's a cool activity but a bit much to spend on something that lasted maybe an hour.
