Not as reflective

I had high hopes for the Rust-Oleum Specialty Reflective Finish, but it turned out to be a complete disappointment. First off, the “reflective” effect is barely noticeable unless you shine a direct light on it in just the right angle—and even then, it’s underwhelming at best. Application was frustrating. The spray goes on unevenly, and no matter how carefully I prepped the surface, it still came out patchy and dull. It also took way longer to dry than expected, and even after curing, the finish felt weak and easily scratched. To make things worse, the coverage is poor. I ended up using far more product than anticipated just to get minimal results. For the price, I expected something far more effective and durable. Overall, this product doesn’t deliver on its claims. If you’re looking for a strong, visible reflective finish, save your money and look elsewhere.

I have wanted reflecting wheels for my bike, but what few are made are very expensive and my bike takes an odd size wheel. When I ran across the listing I was thrilled, but concerned as to whether the paint would work at all because of so many bad reviews. Well, I generally followed the directions on the can and the result is a very reflective wheel rim. Here is what I did: 1) taped off the parts of the wheel where I didn't want paint (obviously). This is a bit of work, but fortunately I was working with the rim only and will build up the wheel later. I used the wheel as a template and cut curves in the blue painters tape so I could mask the machined sidewalks of the rim. 2) shook the can very thoroughly. This is very important because this "paint" is a clear coat carrier for super tiny reflective beads. It is these beads that makes your item reflective, if they are not mixed in to the stream you are spraying at your object, it will not end up reflective! (Think unshaken vinegar and oil dressing.) 3) shook the can again after every 15 seconds of spraying, according to directions. 4) did three very light coats 2 minutes apart. While I was waiting between coats, I kept shaking the can so the reflective beads and the clear coat paint wouldn't separate. After drying, I tested in a dark room and a flashlight and it was definitely reflecting. I noticed that from some parts of the rim (the flats parallel to the ground) were super bright white compared to the rim sidewalls. This can only be from the higher density of beads. This gave me the idea to add more paint. I repeated steps 1-4 after 24 hours. The brightness of the reflectivity increased dramatically. Even the blue painters masking tape is shiny. I may do a third round as an experiment, although my buddy says it looks great already and should stop. I bought another can to do more wheels.

Havnt got any red light tickets!! Works really damn good. Im impressed. Did 4 layers on 2 plates and 2 layers on buddies plates. Still have half a can left over. Perfect ratios for spraying. Works for evening/night accidental red light squabbles. Update 8/6/25 doesnt work for a accidental red light camera trap during the day. 7/10. Wish there was a revised formula to correct that issue. I now owe $350 Doesnt work for day time

It adds a clear coat with reflective flakes. The picture shows a light coat on my motorbike helmet, one pic with flash other without. However, it did not last with handleling...Other reviews here think this thing will make a super shine with lights....this thing is basically spray on reflective tape or plastic reflectors but it barely does the job. I will not buy this again, howevere I Will prob try the "industrial" version of this next time if I can find it for less then 20bucks. I have edited my review several times the more I test it started with 5 stars, really should be at 2 stars but in reality it does add a reflective finish problably made for arts and craft. Not for helmets or mail boxes. Did one side heavy and one side light on my mailbox...could not notice the difference driving in at night. But if I take a picture with flash it does show the reflectiveness. This product is worthless for traffic safety but good for arts and craft or other projects. You should try the industrial version of this...its twice the price but maybe worth it.

This paint does what it advertises! Some of the reviewers seem to have believed that this paint would be self luminescent like a flashlight, glowing day and night. This paint only REFLECTS light back to the source of the light, and it does this VERY well - especially considering the price. I painted grill inserts for my Jeep, expecting so-so results, perhaps nothing due to the reviews. But for the price, I decided to try it anyways. Well, this is the coolest looking paint I have ever seen, almost mesmerizing when it reflects the light back, nearly invisible in the day. Update July 30th, 2010 - I have since sprayed this paint on my rocker guards and the effect is great. Draws attention, period. The reflecting is bright enough to draw comments from strangers, and although it is going to take a few more coats to make the reflection of light uniform - that is ok. The entire purpose of this paint is to draw attention. I feel better now driving through intersections with a car without doors when I know that everyone who is remotely paying attention will see a bright white bar under my car. Great nightime safety addition that looks good in the day as well. As a note - the instructions really need to be followed EXACTLY. I painted my rocker guards with two cans, and the can held at an angle. Worked okay. Then patched up a part that I sanded down while holding the can vertical - no comparison. Repainted both sides with one can while following the instructions exactly (duh) and it is much more reflective.

This will not work for what most want to use it for, it barely works as a reflective material. The surface will reflect the light back towards the source of light. Where it absolutely fails is that it's directly reflected back at a very narrow angle. Picture this your holding a flashlight right between your eyes towards the sprayed surface, the light reflected back is the highest it'll be... move the flashlight where it's 2 inches away from your head but at Same eye level.... the reflected light is negligible and barely seen. The width that the light is returned is pencil thin and won't even work for driveway marking because your cars headlights are to low or to much of an angle so you can't see headlights being reflected. To crazy a price for ineffective effect, save your ?? And put it elsewhere.

Used this to spray over the registration plates on my cars , trucks and motorcycles . it is so reflective under standard flash photography , like in the case of say ......photo radar or red light camaras ...... the entire plate reflects with such intensity that the image in unreadable . Use this info as you please :)

I followed the instructions to the letter. Shook the hell out of the can as instructed, applied thin layers and all it did was make my number plates hazy but definitely not reflective.
