No batteries, do not buy not stainless steel my salt rusted this in 3 days.

Q: Can you use the 2 for only pepper?

Yes. You can put anything you want to inside. Their photo shows salt and pepper but that little "window" is clear plastic. And the containers are not labeled S or P. They are interchangable.
