Do they need Batteries?

No batteries, do not buy not stainless steel my salt rusted this in 3 days.

I’m not sure. I saw them at a restaurant in the Phoenix area and loved them. I hunted them up and they’re great. Don’t over fill. Perfect for a small table where folks may went more S&P.

Can you use the 2 for only pepper?

Yes. You can put anything you want to inside. Their photo shows salt and pepper but that little "window" is clear plastic. And the containers are not labeled S or P. They are interchangable.
