Q: Can anyone detail how these sound compared to the audio technica ath-m50 series?

The M50's sound overall worse. Piercing highs and once you turn them up the sound distorts. I've owned both M50/M50x and now the Sennheiser HD600 & soon these. Of you like over exaggerated bass look elsewhere to be honest if you want alot of bass.

Q: Is the cable a standard 3.5mm replaceable cable?

It comes with two cables. One 3 meter 6.3mm jack for professional equipment, and one 1 meter 3.5mm for phones and stuff. The cable that plugs into the headset is a locking 2.5mm. Yes, it is replaceable, but it will most likely have to be special ordered.

Q: Will these ear pads make you sweat? I had to purchase different pads for my previous pair because the material retained so much heat.

The ear pads are a supportive foam with extremely soft covers. I've had mine for about 5 years and there's still no sign of the foam losing support or breaking down. They've never made my head sweat, but everyone is different. I tend to sweat a lot and very easily.

Q: Do you need an amp to enjoy the headphones. for use with an ipad?

Even headphones that are "mobile-friendly" I believe STILL benefit from a good amp or amp/DAC device. Most phones don't offer the voltage needed to really let you hear the music, so in most cases, I would say an amp is needed. Only exceptions would be like if you have the LG V10, new V20, or else the HTC 10. These phones have DEDICATED amps on them and therefore are known to get louder.
