Everything I have read indicates a genuine Philips bulb is the best replacement you can use
This bulb is definitely brighter than the generic one that it replaced (which only lasted about 2 years after fairly light use). Everything I have read indicates a genuine Philips bulb is the best replacement you can use. While I cannot (yet) speak to longevity, I would like to make a few comments that may help others.First, I personally think it would be better if the bulb was shipped with some more cushioning around it. I don't know how many bulbs arrive DOA as a result of additional shock they may receive in-transit. On the other hand, if they survive I guess it speaks well for the bulb. Sort of a "survival of the fittest" type of situation maybe? ;-)For those of you that might be inclined to do a simple check on the bulb with a multimeter, be aware that they will show as an "open" circuit leading you to think it is dead. These bulbs require 20 kV pulses at startup to "ignite" them which means they initially do show as an "open" circuit (think of it as being like a spark plug in a car). The only practical way of testing one is to fully install it so the bulb gets the proper electrical supply and any interlocks the TV that might have are engaged that might otherwise prevent it from powering on.As others have noted, it is great to have an affordable "bare bulb" available to avoid a more expense replacement (or trip to the shop). The TV is generally great and being able to replace a bulb is a small price to pay to prolong its life. Depending on how technically and mechanically inclined you are, you may want to carefully consider your purchase options.Replacing the entire bulb assembly where the bulb is pre-installed in it's case is pretty simple in terms of handling: Remove two screws for the outer case access cover and two more screws inside that secure the bulb's case. Pull out the old one by the wire handle and plug in the new one -- no worries about getting fingers on the bulb, dropping it, etc. HOWEVER, this item is a bare bulb ONLY so you DO need to be very careful when replacing it so you will not accidentally leave any sort of residue on the bulb as a result of handling it (even including minor skin oil from a fingerprint) which can result in the bulb cracking due to the extreme temperature it operates at. If this sounds a bit intimidating, you may want to consider purchasing a bulb that's already installed in its casing such as this one also sold by Exclusivebulbs: TBL4-LMP Toshiba DLP Projection TV Lamp replacement. Lamp Assembly with High Quality Genuine Original Osram P-VIP Bulb Inside.Replacing the bare bulb is a more involved process. It means removing another screw on the case in order to slide the cover off and have access to the bulb (keep the case and screws because you will be reusing them). Inside there are the two power supply wires which need to be carefully detached first. Then, you only need to remove one of the three little metal retainer clips to extract the bulb; the one in mine actually has a little handle to grab to remove it). (I handle the bulb by the rear screw stud so I don't have to touch the glass or ceramic areas.) You will likely need to reuse the nut on the rear stud and the side terminal screw from the old bulb; I find a magnetic screwdriver to be helpful here to avoid touching the bulb. Reverse the procedure to reinstall the bulb and case. Again, fully install the case in the TV to test the bulb. Also, these bulbs apparently contain mercury, so please recycle them as hazardous waste instead of tossing them in the trash or household recycling.Although the folks at Exclusivebulbs were a bit slow to initially respond back to me due to the holiday craziness, they did properly completely take care of my previous order issues. I will definitely purchase a replacement from them again -- but hopefully I won't need one for a while!
