Boss Spearman (Robert Duvall), Charley Waite (Kevin Costner), Mose Harrison (Abraham Benrubi), and Button (Diego Luna) freegraze their cattle across the vast prairies of the West, sharing a friendship forged by a steadfast code of honor and living a life unencumbered by civilization. When their wayward herd forces them near the small town of Harmonville, the cowboys encounter the corrupt Sheriff Poole (James Russo) and kingpin rancher Denton Baxter (Sir Michael Gambon), who govern the territory through fear, tyranny, and violence. Boss and Charley find themselves inextricably drawn towards an inevitable showdown, as they are forced to defend the freedom and values of a lifestyle that is all too quickly vanishing. Amidst the turmoil, life suddenly takes an unexpected turn for the loner Charley when he meets the beautiful and warm spirited Sue Barlow (Annette Bening), a woman who embraces both his heart and his soul.

A Good Modern Western
A pleasant easy watch western in the fashion of the best of John Wayne. A slow burn with good performances by Duval & Costner, and a couple of fun comedy moments. Nice photography and music score, and a really enjoyable and well choreographed finalé showdown.

Thoroughly Enjoyable
Anyone who enjoys sights of the old Wild West, the scenery and roughness of it all will and should enjoy this film. We did and have also bought Lonesome Dove as a complement.Well acted, great scenery and a story well told.

A superb story.
This is a very good film. Kevin Costner’s direction is masterful and a simple story becomes a fascinating study of relationships between the two main characters and later between the townspeople, Gambon and the two heroes. The conversations between Boss and Charley show us two honest, moral cowboys who are much more complicated than they first appear. The cattle drive era in the west was actually quite short – less than ten years. The cattle ranches were often owned by Scots. The final gun fight is more real than most gunfights in movies. The 45 pistol was heavy and inaccurate over 15 feet. The idea of a ‘quick-draw’ and hitting the opponent between the eyes from 25 feet is dubious. My grandfather used a shotgun and I’ve seen the damage a shotgun will do.

Great Western
Brilliant Western with great actors. Costner and Duval really work well together. A great story of struggles of the old west.

Open Range. Stereo.
They should know that the disc is stereo only and probably edited for the moderate violence. I’m extremely disappointed in purchasing this product, because when I had this movie on disc it had a superb soundtrack, absolutely brilliant. And I regret giving it to my friend. Who in this day would watch a film like this in Stereo!
