VARIOUS ARTISTS - 1950: ROCKABILLY RARITIES - 3 CD SET

really rare!
This is a 2015 UK reissue of Chrome Dreams’ 2011’s Underground Rockabilly: 25 Obscurities From The Days Of The Craze! (54:20 minutes; in a single jewel case) & their 2012 2 disc set: The Rarest Rockabilly In The World, Vol. 2 (55:10 & 54:25 minutes; in a hinged standard sized jewel case). Both jewel cases slip inside of the flapped box shown on this site as Rockabilly Rarities, which definitely lives up to its name – I’ve got a LOT of rockabilly in my collection, but I’ve never heard any of these tracks. This is a totally bare bones set: “Underground” lists artist/ song/ time/ most song composers on back cover; “Rarest” lists the same plus dates on both back cover & inside “booklet” – that’s it. Sound is quite acceptable, but there is some inconsistency in playback volume between some tracks, & some are direct from vinyl (extra long silent intos or vinyl “clicking”). If interested, Windows Media Player correctly identifies everything, although some artists from “Underground” have a mistaken 2nd artist listed. Usually when I pick up a box set like this, I rip it to my computer (lossless) to burn a disc for my personal enjoyment, changing the order of the songs to my liking, & deleting anything that is not outstanding; in this case I ended up w/2 full discs because every song was so good (I only had to cut 2 songs to fit on 2 discs, 79:45 each). Well worth the price!

This CD set has some great songs I hadn't heard before
I have collected a lot of old rockabilly, including a lot of music from The Cramps personal collection. This CD set has some great songs I hadn't heard before, so I'm glad I bought it.

... of buying this box set Yes the music is great if you don't already have the CDs Underground Rockabilly ...
After pre ordering his box set and receiving it only to find the CDs it contains have both been individually released before so just to warn anyone thinking of buying this box set Yes the music is great if you don't already have the CDs Underground Rockabilly Album and Rarest Rockabilly Album in the world vol 2 (double album) but if like me you previously brought the CDs first time around you are only buying new packaging of a outer box

KEEP ROCKIN' KID!!!
Previous reviewers have already pointed out that this compilation is a repackaging of some earlier cds, so this aspect has been covered fully.Although the tracks featured here were undoubtedly rare in the 50s/60s, I think it is fair to say that a number of them have been included in compilations in recent times (for example, 'Honey Bun' seems to appear on every rockabilly/r & r issue over the last few years).Having made this point, this is a pretty decent set. Certainly, a good proportion of the tracks were new to me, and the ones that I am familiar with are well worth listening to again.Very good selection- great as an intro to this genre of music.

WARNING - DECEPTIVE PACKAGING
This set is a repackage of a couple items that have been previously released in 2011 and 2012: UNDERGROUND ROCKABILLY, and RAREST ROCKABILLY IN THE WORLD, VOL. 2. If you already own these items, you will be disappointed that these will be duplicates of what you already have. However, if you do not own either one of these releases, this set will be a wonderful addition to your rockabilly collection.

BEWARE! Two cds in this package are from "The rarest rockabilly album in the world" which I already have.HOWEVER....... the third cd is full of stuff Ive never heard before. real downhome southern rockabilly recommended for all.Possibly mis leading blurb re the other 2 cds but cd3 is the reason this has 3 stars.
