Yes, you must purchase the optional Ooni 16 gas burner. I have a Ooni 16 with the option to burn has. I paid $99 for the burner.

Does it come with an attached thermometer?

There is a thermometer on the "Oven" door that is useful for preheating or baking. The "Pizza" door doesn't have one. You will want to have a non-contact infrared thermometer to check the stone temperature when making pizza.
