no, it should not become crumbly, it should maintain it s elasticity

If you cut it in half it’s just barely too small to cover a single gang. If you’ve got 40 boxes you’ll want 25-30 pads

Q: will this work in the attic over fan & light boxes as a vapor barrier?

It wouldn't be a standard use of the putty pad, but it would certainly function in the same way as a vapor barrier. This product uses no water-soluble expansion ingredients so it does provide water resistance.

Q: Can I cut one pad to use it with two single 1-gang or it is better to use one pad for each box?

You can cut and piece the putty pad together as you see fit. You don't want to stretch the material or combine several pads together, but you can cut off excess from one outlet and combine with other pieces to form additional pads. Coverage is going to depend on the size of the outlet box though, ultimately. There are lots of different sizes. Some single gang outlets will require 1 pad, while the double gang in the photo shows 1 pad covering it.
