A nice lengthy read
What a fascinating topic. History is one of those subjects where it can get boring, unless told in the right way. There's endless stories of military history and this book does a great job with informing you about the greatest military commanders that history has to offer. Its incredible to see the evolution over time of tactics, policies, and technology. Great work by the author I was seriously educated and informed

I would like to start by saying that I purchased the audible version to listen to while at work. The content of the book it pretty good, giving a good bit of information on each person in a relatively small amount of time. The problem I had is with the audible version. The sound quality is pretty bad, made worse by the fact that the narrator hisses his Ss and Ts. It borderline makes my ears bleed. He also has a hard time it seems, to pronounce names and places, while also taking random breaks in the middle of sentences. It is made worse by the way it sounds like he would lean away from the microphone occasionally, making the sound erratic; VERY annoying. I listened to the other two books by Barry Linton as well: The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire, and Hannibal Barca, both narrated by the same person and both with the same terrible sound quality.

Covers time and space
As an encyclopedia of military leaders, this is effective. It covers a hefty span of years and all of the continents. Periods get their own summary, as does each military leader. Important battles in their careers are laid out in detail, and their specific accomplishments and strategies called out. For someone interested in military history this is a great resource.

Very "readable" for a history book
I liked the footnotes that filled in the gaps of my knowledge for fuller understanding. It was for a first Zoom class for all of us including the instructor. No dropouts andeveryone found something to contribute to the discussions

Very basic
The book is ok for a quick read of some of histories' famous commanders and the battles they fought so you can read about them somewhere else. However, for anyone that has a slightly higher-than-basic understanding of the people, battles, dates, and other historical details; this book is terrible. After just reading the first 40 pages I recognized many historical inaccuracies; events being misdated by 200 or more years at time (probably just typos, still means it was not thought out well), whole battles being mislabeled/misplaced (The author describes the Battle of Cannae immediately after describing Hannibal's set up before the Battle of Lake Trasimene and does not reference the Cannae battle set up or the actual battle of Lake Trasimene at all), and it has a generally chaotic feel to it when you read. If you want to learn anything other than the extreme basics about the battles and people in this book, spend the extra money and look elsewhere.

like reading great things about great leaders and people that ...
You can see that someone has done his homework. Thorough researching has been done to ensure that the reader can get his hands on this kind of information. I, myself, like reading great things about great leaders and people that have inspired other people for centuries. These things motivate me and I can't help myself when I look at a book like this, I just got to have it. There are a lot of greats and you can identify with some of them for sure, having similar characteristics.

A series of essays about some military commanders
A good overview of some historical figures. Well researched (as far as I know). No bibliography or references list.It was occasionally confusing as the book seemed to be made up of essays about the commanders. Each had an overview of the commander's life, then one or two crucial battles were described in more detail. Thus leading to a lack of chronological order within each person's description.
