Impressive!
After reading the reviews on this scanner, I purchased one. Really couldn't go wrong with the price, but didn't want a lot of hassle either. Building an Access 2010 database for inventory control, orders and invoicing for our forthcoming online store. Because we have an inventory of over 1,500 items to be entered into our database I wanted to scan UPC codes into the (database) DB. In addition the scanner would be used for scanning UPC codes into an online service which will allow for product look up to get addition descriptive info and comparable market pricing. Received the product promptly, in Amazons usual excellent packaging box. By the way, we are so impressed with the service we get from Amazon that it's become our number place to go to find products. Setup was very easy and was able to figure it out without looking at the instructions. Oops, I got the bottom plate screwed into place, but had to look at the instructions to see that I had to remove the plate and install the vertical stand first and then screw the plate down into place. My error, hey who looks at instructions anyhow! From reading the reviews I kinda dreaded attaching the scanner to the computer because of the encrypted instruction for scanner set up that was mentioned in some reviews. However, had my data entry form built in Access 2010 and the time came. By the way, if your planning on using this scanner with Access, make sure its a non numerical field or set the property for that field to text not a number field. Not much is said about this subject, so including it for others that may be looking. For Excel, click in the cell your going to scan into then Right click. Select Format Cells, Click the Number Tab at the top, then select Number in under the Category. To the right of that select 0 Decimal places. In Microsoft Word just place your cursor where you want the scan to be placed and use your scanner as you normally would. The scanner will place the number where ever you want. Plugged the scanner into a USB port and gave Windows 7 plug and play time to install the correct driver automatically from their own database as there is no CD software provided with this product. Two beeps from the scanner were heard and pop up said, that the driver had been installed successfully. Placed my cursor in a Access text box that I had labeled UPC Code. Pointed the scanner at a UPC code on an inventory item to be scanned and heard a beep. Presto, the scanner had successfully scanned the UPC code into my entry from correctly. Checked the Access table and yes, the UPC code was in the storage table where it was supposed to be. Double checked the UPC code from the box to what was entered and it was correct. Yeah! I didn't scan any ISBN (book bar code) yet, so additional set up may be needed, but unsure. I went to my online UPC look up service and placed my cursor in the entry box and scanned in the UPC code. Within a nano second I had a screen full of product pictures, info and comparable produce pricing. Wow! I am impressed! This will make product look up so much easier if my inventory has a UPC code on it. The only con I can see is the distance between the trigger and the mounting cradle to allow me to pull the trigger is very small. Am saying this as I didn't want to pull the scanner out of it's cradle each time to scan an item. I have smaller fingers and would imagine larger fingers would be a problem. However, I also noticed that when the scanner sits in the cradle that the scanner is always on, so all I have to do is slide an item with a UPC code under the scanner and it scans automatically without pulling the trigger. Unit is very nice looking, sturdy and seems to be heavy enough. You can't go wrong for the price! Update: We purchased a second unit because the first one worked so well. Brand name was different on the new unit, but had the same results installing, operating, both computers using Win 7. We have so much inventory to enter that I now have my PC entering one product line, and the laptop entering another product line. Unit reads ISBN numbers very well too. When I power the computer up for the day, I hear two beeps from the scanner which is normal. Very nice unit!

Highly Programmable BUT you must know a little coding!
The instruction book that comes with this amazing scanner is like a little "how to" guide for every kind of barcode known to man, worldwide, from UPC to the ubiquitous Code 39 standard. It literally teaches you how to program ANY format bar, if you know a little, simple coding. THIS SCANNER REQUIRES SOFTWARE-- from excel to quickbooks to home inventory, or even a free hosted solution (where you can enter your barcodes on a website) such as upcdatabase dot com. You have your choice of: 1. accepting the factory defaults (which are fine), 2. programming the unit with basic string instructions (basically F1/F2/F3 keys once you enter your command interface or character editor-- you have to know a little basic sdk/ dos/ ide stuff for this-- IOW, the command prompt or text editor, not just a window drag and drop GUI) or 3. Scanning in barcode representations (including creating your own!) that control the settings of the scanner. Very advanced, but a very cool feature if you're into a little coding. THIS DOES NOT support web or smartphone QR codes-- there are plenty of free ios and android apps on Amazon for those! Default output is a number string, so you CAN use it right out of the box with the majority of websites and inventory systems, or even excel. With either bartender or other software, or POS, or free online, you also can create your own "unofficial" inventory upc's to keep your own inventory system. Don't "bite" on websites that claim to assign you "official" upc codes recognizable worldwide. Those are only available from GS1 in the US, come in blocks of 100, and cost $750 to $900 for the first block! On the other hand, you can create your own for internal use free, and they will work fine with this scanner, and most other software. There also are code software programs that work WITH quickbooks and other accounting programs to either use or create upcs-- for example, using those for inventory you buy from other companies, and your own for internally created products. This is a great little scanner, even right out of the box, and I've tried it on XP, Vista, 7 and 8 with no driver problems. If auto scan fails on a bar or two, just rescan with the trigger and you'll do great. Highly recommended.

Best Priced Scanner For Functionality and Performance.
I did significant research online prior to placing an order for this scanner, and for the price, you will find nothing better than this. SOME OBSERVATIONS: Ease of Use: I plugged it in and started scanning right after Windows installed drivers (about 5 seconds). Once used with the stand, you can scan 100's of items in minutes. Automatic Scanning/Shut Down: The laser will turn on and scan automatically when the sensor senses an object within about 2 feet of it. It also turns off the laser about 2 seconds after attempting to scan which I guess saves power and will also prevent the annoying laser from beaming constantly. Fast Scan Rate: Scans at a rate of 100 scans per second, which is normal from my research, and definitely adequate for a small business. It also conveniently makes a beep whenever it successfully scans a barcode. Awesome Stand: This stand is not the greatest, but something I consider complimentary given the price (I paid 35ish including shipping). It gets some weight from a piece of metal they provide which will need to be screwed into the stand at the bottom. It's an easy "job" that'll require just a screwdriver and 2 minutes of work. The weight may not be enough depending on how much movement there will be around it. For my purposes, it has worked just fine and has not fallen in the 2 weeks I have made use of it. The stand's maneuverability is not very good, but I think for most purposes, it will be adequate. Please let me know if you have any questions and I will try to answer them as I know I have not touched on every issue.

works well for me
I received this barcode scanner today and was able to put it to use within a matter of minutes. I was a bit worried after having read some of the other reviews and even more so when I saw that the unit did not come with any useful instructions, but I was able to get it set up and working very quickly. Like some other reviewers noted, the unit that arrived was a bit different from that pictured, but not substantially so. The stand was easy enough to put together, but it is very lightweight and the scanner does not snap into it, only rests in the holder. That means it will easily fall out. I fixed this problem with a rubber band. The lightweight nature of the stand means that it will tip over fairly easily. That could be a problem if used in a location where it might occasionally get bumped. The stand I have came with two holes in the base where you could attach it to a board or wall. The unit seems to not be particularly fragile. After using it for a few moments I left my desk and one of my cats knocked it to the floor (I hadn't put the rubber band on it yet). I picked it up and kept right on using it. The included cable attaches to the unit in a way that would make it somewhat difficult to remove. The other end is a USB connector to plug into a computer. No software came with the unit, but when I plugged it into my computer (running Windows) it searched for and found the required driver. I then opened the program with which I wanted to use the scanner and put the cursor into the area for the barcode. I placed an item with a barcode under the scanner and it read the code and entered the numbers into the program's field. Some reviews have said that their units were not automatic, but mine is. There is a sensor on it that recognizes when something is placed near the scanner. The light then comes on and scans the item. When the item is removed the light goes off. There is a green ready light on the top of the unit to let you know when it is ready (on) or scanning (off). For the most part the scanner did well with the 200 or so items I initially scanned. It usually read the code quickly regardless of whether it was "up" or "down." It also did well based on how far away the item was from the scanner. I usually tried to keep it at a couple of inches, but it may have ranged from 2 to 6 or so. The angle also didn't seem to matter too much. (In other words, it didn't have to be perfectly flat to read the code.) Despite this success, every once in a while I would have to try several times to get the scanner to read the code. On a handful of items it wouldn't seem to read it at all and I had to enter the codes into my program by hand. On the whole, I am quite happy with this item so far. I am using it to enter a lot of items into collection databases and this will save me a huge amount of time. (The items I entered so far were all DVDs. I'll update this review if it has trouble with other items I plan to enter.)

Solid Scanner
I normally don't write reviews but was so please with the quality of this scanner for the money that I felt compelled to write one. Application: I am using this scanner as part of my POS solution for our used bookstore. We are currently using it to scan books into our system. Quality: the stand goes together easily and has a metal plate that is installed on the bottom to keep the scanner from top-sizing. On windows 7 it was truly plug and play, I literally plugged the scanner in, scanned a bar code and it typed the text. There are only a few bar codes that I tried on it that would not scan (2 out of 200 or so). Features: It scans quickly and inputs the data just as quickly. It has a motion sensor so it knows when something has moved in front of it. This is extremely important for hands free scanning. Drawbacks: I would like to to scan for a longer time when triggered by the motion sensor. The screws that hold the cradle on the stand don't tighten very tightly without a screwdriver. All in all a great purchase.

READ THIS FIRST BEFORE BUYING Because My Scanner was NOT Automatic --- *** Beware ***
Conclusions: If you're needing an automatic scanner, beware. (read for more details of my experience) * Scanner worked and was easy to set up, just as described. * The barcode scanner I received was NOT an automatic scanner * Decent scanner if you're okay with/without automatic function * If you need to have the automatic feature... proceed with caution. My Review: I chose this scanner over the other ones listed because of its overall rating. It seemed like a lot of people were having good experiences with this item. I've never bought a barcode scanner before so I trusted the reviews and expected a quality product that matched the seller's description. When the item arrived, I was very excited to get it all set up and use it for my scanning needs. The automatic feature would be so convenient. The setup itself was very easy... just plug and play, but the instructions were lacking (to say the least). The "User's Manual" was just a double-sided page folded into a brochure-like setup. Instructions to program scanner was VERY limited; you really need to figure it out. The manual consisted of different images of barcodes that had a specific command/program. Once I figured it out (by trial and error), I was able to scan different things and have the barcode numbers display on my computer. That wasn't too bad. However, I read every barcode and scanned each one to see if I can get the scanner to work automatically, but nothing. Frustrated, I went online to amazon and reviewed my order. Sure enough, the description says it's an automatic barcode scanner. So I took a closer look at some of the negative reviews and discovered other buyers had the same issue. One person even commented on the negative review with an answer to the problem. S/he mentioned something about scanning the right programming barcode that says "automatic scan" found on page 14 of the manual. Too bad my user's manual only had 9 pages. Nowhere could I find the barcode that said "automatic" so I knew then that the model that I received does not have an automatic scanning option. Now I am wondering if I the seller sends out different models for the same Amazon listing. That would explain why the scanner I received does not look like the one pictured in the listing. And why the listing manages to receive high overall review ratings. I am an Amazon seller myself and I know that sellers need to ensure that the items they are selling needs to match the description. On the seller's Amazon label, it even says "USB Automatic Barcode Sca...e Adjustable Stand (Black) - New" which means I received the right item. Needless to say, I am returning the item back to the sender. It's very frustrating as I was hoping to use the barcode scanner for my next shipment of products to list on Amazon. **** If you are buying this product, I hope that you do get the right scanner. If you get one that says E-rainbow and has a little user's manual that only has 9 pages, I hope you didn't get the same model I got. Good luck. But for myself, I am buying from a different seller. ****

Works well in classroom setting
Awesome little barcode scanner. I purchased this to use in a school classroom to teach students vocational skills. After searching online, many of the scanners were priced at $50 and up, even up to $200. I was skeptical at a $20 scanner but I did not want to buy something expensive to be used in a classroom where it could get beat up. I decided to try this one out to see if it could do the job and survive the daily use in a classroom. The scanner arrived quickly and paired easily with my Apple laptop at home, the HP laptop at school, and the HP Chromebooks. Some other reviews mentioned that they had trouble getting their scanners to work with Apple laptops but this was not the case for me. Set up was all plug-and-play. I set up an Excel worksheet to pull barcode information when a barcode was scanned. This worked as planned and really made the vocational lesson that I was teaching come to life. The students enjoy using it and they look forward to the math lessons that get to use the scanner. The scanner stand works well although it sometimes takes a few tries to get the scanner seated properly. Do not forget to keep the barcode card that comes with the scanner. This will help you configure your scanner if you need to make changes. I laminated my card and have it stored away for safe keeping.

Good little cheap scanner
This is definitely a "straight from China" product, but then, what isn't these days? And this isn't a bad thing when it comes to this little scanner. The construction seems sturdy. The cord is about 6 feet or so. The stand does it job and has a metal plate in the bottom to keep it sturdy. The scanner makes a pretty loud BEEP when it scans. Some people may prefer this. There doesn't seem to be an option to adjust the volume, just to turn the beep off and on. I use this to scan barcodes on Cisco IP phones, serial numbers on boxes, etc. It seems to work just fine. Make sure you save the included manual; you need it to program/change options in the future. If you are a retail outlet or otherwise scanning a high volume about of stuff, you will probably want to spend a bit more and get a name brand scanner. However, if you are casually using it or perhaps even for medium loads I don't think you can go wrong. One last thing I will add - keep in mind this is an automatic scanner. This means you do not have to pull the trigger to start scanning. Some people may prefer a manual scanner that requires a pull of the trigger. If you are scanning a box, for example, that has barcodes stacked on top of each other, the automatic feature makes it easy to scan the wrong one. However, if you start from the side to line it up correctly then bring it over you should be ok.
