One of only 2 printed books I own
This is my "go-to" book if I don¹t know what to watch. It never disappointed me! Highly recommended.

Excellent book.
High quality finish, brilliant stills from a broad range of movies. A really good level of detail and summary of each movie. One slight improvement could be adding a checklist at the end but otherwise a fantastic addition for any movie-lover.

Seriously good read
I bought this for someone who is bedridden and doesn’t want to sit in front of the TV all day, and they absolutely love it! It’s a perfect companion for movie buffs, and gives great information. Highly recommend to anyone with a love for films.

You DON'T need to see all these films, but it's a good book
Is this a book every movie fan should have? Probably. As long as you have plenty of other movie books besides. It’s big and it’s glossy and it looks good and it has some great photos in it. There are also a few mistakes, but more of the ‘title isn’t italicised when it should be’ variety than huge bloopers. What ISN’T in it is the best 1001 films ever made. No way. Of course a lot of this comes down to personal preference but I’d swap out at least a quarter, maybe a third of the films here and replace them with other ones. Some titles are there possibly to be uncontroversial. There are incredibly slight avant-garde shorts like Blonde Cobra and Hold Me While I’m Naked and the hard-going likes of Salo. There are loads of Westerns from the Fifties, a ton of foreign stuff and the likes of Bull Durham and Good Morning, Vietnam. It’d take too long for me to list all the films that aren’t there but surely should be, so I’ll only list three from my all-time favourite top ten that are absent: A Kind Of Loving, Oliver! and The Truman Show. There’s a measly one Laurel and Hardy film, crazy when many of the shorts they did remain the freshest and funniest comedies ever made. They’re certainly a lot better use of your time than Wavelength, a 45-minute film in which the camera slowly, very slowly, zooms in on a picture on the wall. Nothing else happens in it.In the latest edition it’s sadly clear that identity politics has come to the book, distorting the selection. Merit definitely comes in second place to the immutable characteristics of those making the movies: hence most of the recent films are made by non-whites or women. How else to explain the likes of Saint Maud, Booksmart, Lovers Rock (not even a proper film) and the dreadfully named Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. In a further friendly nod to the race activism of 2020, both the front AND back cover feature black people (in two unremarkable films). It’s just so obvious to some of us that it’s bending the knee to woke with these tokenistic gestures.Let us hope future editions see a return to sensible. Because despite all my criticisms, this is an enjoyable book that lends itself to being periodically picked up and browsed - even more so when you’ve just watched a film that is in there. (Currently I’ve seen 700 of the movies selected - there’s NO WAY on earth I ever want to see all of them!)

Much better than expected!
I enjoy a wide range of films, including classic and film noir genres. This book goes right back to the early 1900s, it has very nice full colour pictures. The descriptions are not exhaustive, but give nice introductions to explore new films. At the reduced price, this book is a steal.
