Don't Skip This One!
If you're a Fleming fan then this book will make you wish that Amis continued writing Bond. The story doesn't ape Fleming at all and instead feels so close in tone and voice to the author's work that it's uncanny. But I don't say this to diminish Amis's contributions because he does an excellent job with established characters like Bond and M while creating compelling new characters like the beautiful Ariadne, the tough and honorable Litsas, and the demented Colonel Sun himself.Amis allows us to see M out of the office and shows Bond with no gadgets, usually armed with just a knife, grenades, and his wits. Colonel Sun is a brilliant villain, truly deranged and eerie to read and his infamous torture scene is compelling and disturbing all on its own. Much was made of the recent 2015 Bond film SPECTRE homaging this torture sequence and I can assure you that this is one of those cases where the book is far more effective. If you enjoy the films you may see that this story has been homaged in For Your Eyes Only, The World is Not Enough, Die Another Day, and the aforementioned SPECTRE. I'm a longtime fan of the films and reading the novels is a great way to rediscover Bond. If you decide to do so, start with Fleming but make sure not to skip this one.

I've already rated this novel in the past but this rating and review is for the new VINTAGE release of Amis one and only Bond novel. The story is frankly one of the best in the series (this is a better novel than one or two of Flemings) and is a must-read for a Bond fan. This VINTAGE edition includes an introduction by Kingsley Amis (written in 1991) and gives us a brief but insightful re-telling of how he came to write this novel. The cover for this edition is classy and straightforward (like the plot inside) and I'm so pleased that this novel's long overdue re-publication has finally come about.
