The boom is telescoping - good product
This boom is a different design from the boom included with the base level OnStage mic stand. That one is a single piece boom arm which slides through the mounting to adjust length. This boom arm is a two piece arm - that is, the front tube slides inside the rear tube. The rear tube also slides through the mounting just like the single piece arm. What’s the difference you ask? The two piece telescoping arm can be shortened, so it can fit in tighter spaces. The one piece arm cannot be shortened; therefore when you want the mic clip closer to the vertical tube, you must the slide the entire arm through the mounting which causes the arm to stick further out from the back of the stand. Whereas this two piece tube can be shortened without the excess hanging out from the back. In other words, it can fit in tighter spaces. Also, since the telescoping arm has two tubes, it has two tightening knobs instead of one. The extra knob is closer to the vocalist, so the vocalist can more easily reach it to adjust length or twist the mic to a different angle.Net result - the two piece telescoping arm has more parts, but has more flexibility in placement and handling.By the way, I’ve used OnStage mic stands for years and never experienced any mechanical failure. These are medium duty stands, and maybe not the best choice if you are a road warrior, traveling and gigging nightly in different venues. But for home, studio, or moderate gigging, the basic OnStage stands are reasonably priced and definitely up to the job.

Quality construction
I like the adaptability, sturdiness of this boom. It will work well with our setup

Versatile, strong. Reliable value.
This is a nice versatile boom. It can tuck in where you need it and holds it’s position tightly. Keep in mind the stand you put this on, the clip/shock mount and mic weight are all factors in this as well so be realistic. The back of the stand is not actually a counter weight, it’s more of a handle. It is removable though so if you need to add a counter weight in it’s place that is an option for you.Overall I recommend this boom for high function and value. I use this brand a lot and I never have any issues. I have a bunch of their stands and stand components. I’ve always been happy with their quality and reliability.

Solidly built and a great value
Five stars for solid construction and for meeting my every need. Note that the specifications on this page are in error. The claim is the boom is adjustable from 19" to 32". The boom is fixed at 30" and does not telescope - it slides along the top sleeve, controlled by a tightening knob. I do not see that as a problem because this design does allow you to extend or retract the book to place it where you need it (within range of the overall length.)Some features I like include precision machined threads that easily mate with other devices such as an On Stage KSA7575 Universal Keyboard Stand Microphone Attachment Bar (which I use), or, in some cases, a fixed stand such as a Musician's Gear Die-Cast Mic Stand Black. At the business end of mine I attached an On Stage MY250 Shure Type Microphone Clip, which mates perfectly. The threads are precision cut on both items. The small counter weight on the arm is a nice touch too. I use relatively heavy mics, and the counterweight, as well as the lever that allows you to adjust the boom angle, keep your settings rock solid.I have included two customer-supplied images at the top of this page to show how I have mine set up. If you are seeking some flexibility in microphone stands, having a few of these on hand will give you that flexibility. If you are using a keyboard stand attachment bar, then this boom is essential. Aside from the erroneous specifications, I have found my boom to be perfect and completely meets my needs. Do some measuring before ordering.

A little money gets you a good boom
I have been doing a karaoke gig for over two years now and I have wanted to add an adjustable boom for some time but I never took the time to investigate what I needed. I found the On Stage MSA7040TB and I love it. While it is not the sturdiest peace of equipment I have ever dealt with, it has performed at my shows most admirably and I love having it. The boom extends and holds it's position if properly tightened. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone that is in need of a boom stand.Thanks,it188

Works as expected
Using this with a short stand to mic a guitar cab. Holds up a heavy ribbon mic with no issues. Goes down to a very compact size and extends pretty far too.
